NYC Audubon Society (NYCAS) is in significant need of volunteers to help survey breeding birds in Prospect Park this spring. Please read NYCAS's director Glenn Phillips attached memo to me. You can either volunteer / reserve from the email addresses attached or simply show up at the Prospect Park Audubon Center the eve of May 12th..Please help if you can.It does not require much time or work to record 2009 breeding Prospect birds. This year NYC Audubon has two important projects in Brooklyn that need your help. The first, a breeding bird census in Prospect Park needs at least 30 volunteers to help. The second, a Project Safe Flight survey of buildings on Plaza Street needs just three more volunteers. If you are available to help one morning a week for an hour or two and can get up and out early in the morning before regular work hours, please contact us or attend our training session at the Prospect Park Audubon Center on Tuesday, May 12 at 6pm.

5/10 prospect ...a day of color, some rarities

A slow morning after a terrific birdathon followed , yet that did not tarnished Prospect's reputation as she presented with three very good sightings reported by birders afield today.(Photo of Blue Grosbeak taken By John Ascher)

here are the hilights:

1) SUMMER TANAGER ,likely 2 individuals, reported at Tunnel Arch Stairs, the other along the horse trail behind the Music Pagoda /Lily Pond .

The first Summer Tanager was spotted during the Brooklyn Bird Club field trip led by famed legend, John Yrizarry, former president during a Classic Leaders Series field walk, at the top of the Tunnel Arch stairs, which is closed off. The stairs connect Payne Hill with East Drive , near Dongan Oak Monument.

The second Summer Tanager (SUTA) was seen along the Horse trail at the Music Pagoda by Rob Bate and Tracy Meade, then reported again by John Aschher and Chaoyan above the wood viewing platform at Lily Pool's back shore. Lily Pool is just northwest of the boathouse.

2) Very near the second SUTA report, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was reported by observer Michele Dreger,about 3:30pm at the entrance to the horse trail by the wooden bridge near the Binnen and the music pagoda.

3) To top off the rarity parade, in contrast to RED, Keir Randall reported BLUE GROSBEAK late this morning, at Lamppost 249 , or the southwest base of Lookout Hill along Well Drive. It was subsequently seen by several observers, namely Suzanne Ortiz, John Ascher and Chaoyan. I was fortunate to see the bird myself, after 11:45 Sunday services, particularly praying it would stick around 0:)>. As i was ready to drive my car for Mother's Day holiday, I get John's's textmessage. Grabbing bins from my car compartment, I rushed over after John Ascher texted me again and I found him waiting for me at LP249. The Blue Grosbeak was frequenting a bare ground spot behind the bent fence 200 feet left of the famed Lamppost.Look for the low sign I placed behind that fence, that says "Habitat Restoration".I guess my mother would forgive me for a few minutes spare time to see the bird.

Whew ! and I have to report the birdathon results..hohum...what a whirlwind it has been this weekend.... stay tuned for birdathon details Monday eve,
