Hour and half in Green-Wood today. Grackles, parakeets, and
mockingbirds making lots of noise, but otherwise pretty quiet.
Robins everywhere. Only one phoebe. Saw my first
golden-crowned kinglet and first mourning cloak butterfly of the
year. So it must be true about spring being here.

Prospect official feeder results late 2010-2011
I noted the last remaining feeder was empty while working in the area today. This marks the official end of the feeder season. I will take down the last feeder by the end of the week.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all for their kind donations whether it was cash or physical seed. And also I want to thank all for coming by to see whats up at the feeders all winter long. I am glad the feeders and its birds delighted everyone ! Among the best sightings were the loyal PINE SISKINS and the COMMON REDPOLL marking season long and single day highlights respectively; Of course, just seeing the usual birds was a terrific and welcomed delight in the best of days and the snowiest of days. Redtailed Hawk near disaster
PP 3/27 LATE AFTERNOON
I was at the baseball field west edge by the fence enclosure and saw the redtailed hawk in a stoop glide very low heading for the slope bordering the cemetery, after prey. To my disbelief as I watched in my bins, it flew right into the metal weld wire fence but it looked like it pulled up at the last second but nevertheless bounced off the fence ...I went over to check and found the adult hawk in the London plane by the drive, on a low branch..It was all right ...cause afterwards it did fly multiple circles b4 heading towards the Upper Pool... A good ending with relief...

Hi Peter,
In addition to the birds reported in the blog for March 27, I also had, around 4 PM this afternoon a Pied-billed Grebe on the lake near the construction area. I didn’t see it on other’s lists. Also not listed by others were a Belted Kingfisher in the same area, and on the end of the Peninsula a single Mockingbird.
Nice to see the phoebes back around, and the R-n Duck still on the Upper Pool.

Prospect March 24th
Chilly day ( well cold more like it), and that's typical weather for a drake BUFFLEHEAD, seen this afternoon on the lake very near the West Island shelter. It glided along the west shore.Farther out nearer the Peninsula side, a PIED-BILLED GREBE mingling near RUDDY DUCKS and the usual complement of NORTHERN SHOVELERS
But off water , until three "jumped in" the lake , 4 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were on the 3 Sister Islands perched by the strait. On the other end of that same island, also 4 counted were BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, present as well yesterday for an overnighter. So, Quartets abound.
Center Drive seems like the best action today, one AMERICAN TREE SPARROW with busy AMERICAN ROBINS scrounging through the snow covered ground. [ Rob Bate reports a very good influx of Robins throughout. See his report]. I ran into Mary E who mentioned a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET near the 3 Arches.
Yesterday, with my fingers crossed, I saw 2 drake WOOD DUCKS courting a hen on the Upper Pool by the back shore. ( Psst, Hey fellas, there's a nest box on the island ready for her)

American Chestnuts event
There is an event on the American Chestnut species to be planted someday in Prospect and BBGarden after Staten Island Greenbelt propagation. There were blight resistant hybrid American Chestnut trees I planted with my crew some years ago, and they are at least 25 feet high ,hopefully mature further. But its great to see the reintroduction of this grand species.

Brooklyn Bridge Park bird walk April 30th 9 am
In an effort to foster birding throughout Brooklyn, I agreed to lead a short duration bird walk for the Brooklyn Bridge Park on April 30th at 9 am .The meeting spot I presumed is at the park building at the end of Old Fulton Street (Fulton Ferry ) , by the Barge music boat.. The BBPark habitat is its infancy, a very young green space that will be improving over time .We should see some migrants then..If not, the Manhattan skyline views i have to say are fantastic! anyway , click below on the link for details and hopefully some brooklyn bird club members and guests will show up .
Nearest train is the A or C line to High Street..Or from Jay street /Court St subway, walk only 10 minutes down past Cadman Plaza along Court St. to the Brooklyn Bridge, turn left to the waterfront.

Space event and Spring Peepers....
"Special posting"
On occasions, since migrating birds may fly in front of it ( I need to justify this posting :)> ) , the moon is a terrific space object to look at. Tonight there is a ( if clear skies is afforded us) special event. "Super Perigee" ( according to the news) moon is happening at tonight's rising, when the moon looks super sized...

Yesterday I and Mary E went to Staten Island, where we saw snipes at Mt Loretto...but the greatest highlight especially for a deaf guy was hearing 1000's of Spring Peepers at a Great Kills marsh spot, just behind the US Park Police building. The din was really LOUD ! ( just the way i needed it)

#78 bus from the Ferry and a very nice long walk is well rewarding..Also we saw over 60 + Gannets offshore at Crookes Point.

March 17th Prospect: more Lake variety, Tree Swallow
The best bird for today was seen on Prospect Lake, uncommon LESSER SCAUP. I received a late aftenoon call from Doug Gochfeld who spotted the hen near West Island. I got out after 5 pm with my scope and eventually saw the female Lesser, in the area of West Island , but more away from the island, a sleeping bird. I saw it well from the rustic shelter. With my scope, you can see the head "hesitation", or notch in the head shape that distinguishes Lesser from the round heads of Greater Scaup.
On the lake as well, more nice stuff. 6 Hooded Mergansers in the middle of the lake had to compete with a pair of WOOD DUCKS. I should tell the Wood Ducks they are hanging out in the wrong area, that they should check out the new nest box at Upper Pool.
With several good reports form the Lake lately, its good to check this location more now since March is more waterbird month with spring passages...

Prospect March 16th Duck passages....
This is the third posting today.
Before today's bird summary, a note about the feeders.
The feeders were refilled today for the last time. As winter draws to a close Sunday, the feeders served its useful purpose throughout the season. Now the birds must move on as spring approaches. And as well I will be busier with spring work projects. By March end, the feeders will be emptying and they will be taken down. So, enjoy the "homestretch".
*************************
Signs of spring migration unfolded with the passage and presence of ducks, particularly same day, same time three different species of Mergansers , a rare occurrence for the park with sightings of Common, Hooded and Red-breasted. See a previous posting ( scroll down ) for details. However, a report from Bob O'Neill when I ran into him is that he got to see the Common before they took off just after noon. So, a fleeting , yet lucky moment for some birders. Later , 7 Hooded Mergansers were spotted by Duck Island.
For those missing out on the triple treat Mergs, there is though a nice sight of RING-NECKED DUCK, 3 drakes and 2 hen gracing the Upper Pool this afternoon. And throw in also , likely the year's first PIED-BILLED GREBE with them. However, the grebe was fleeting as well; after an initial sighting, it was nowhere to be found. Perhaps it went inside the new Wood Duck box ;)>.

Latest on threatened 4 Sparrow Marsh preserve
As you may already know about, here's the latest on 4 Sparrow , which is a delightful birding spot . This past weekend my group walk saw Eastern Phoebe and low flying Turkey Vulture. My friend Tom Preston saw the next morning 3 American Woodcock and Merlin. The marsh is renown at this time of year for Wilson's Snipes.( Its only a 10 minute walk south on Flatbush Ave , from the bus last stop at Kings Plaza. Look for the weedy lot next to the Toys R Us.There used to be a sign "4 Sparrow Preserve" , but we know it was taken down "mysteriously" ) .-Kingsboider

March 14th Prospect...a day that starts with a little "roar"
March is known as a month that roars --wind wise and weather wise. But it also can be a bird wise "roar".
Today under cloudy skies and least expectations for anything birdy, a few good things kicked off the beginning of anticipatory migration season.
The excellent report of rare WILSON's SNIPE dominates the day, first reported by Bob O'Neill at the Vale of Cashmere, of all places . (Usually we would expect snipe at Prospect Lake or the peninsula shoreline, the larger water system spots). Huddling against the stone wall inside the pool at the north end, three birders named "Robert" were watching the Snipe until a "Peter" butted in. Bob , the founder of the freshwater shorebird, along with Rob Bate and Rob Jett were also watching from near the stairs. After I left to get back to work, I received a text shortly after of PINE WARBLER above one of those stairs, again spotted by Bob O'Neill.
Later, I went back for the Snipe around 4 PM. I found Heidi Cleven watching the shorebird. But it moved to the other side of the pool --same area--wall , inside the north pool , sitting on muddy edges, the gorgeous bird inside a break in the wall and next to the protective cover of an uplifted stone. There was busier traffic from visitors and schoolkids in the Vale, so I presumed the tired snipe was unnerved by action.
There was more. We bumped into Rob Jett and learned from him that RED-BREASTED MERGANSER at the Boathouse pond and AMERICAN PIPIT found walking on the Nethermead lawn added to the day's hilights. We got the drake Red-breasted Merg but the Pipit already flown. There were other notable things but read Rob Bate's report below.
And it can only get better from here on...

A great day to begin the spring season in PP.
Bob O'neill found the Wilson's Snipe in the Vale and then refound the Pine Warbler Eddie Davis found yesterday. Other notables were, American Pipit (found by Rob Jett), mating Red Tails on Nellie's Lawn, 5 species of woodpeckers, one each of both Kinglets and lots of Robins and Song Sparrows. Birds were singing everywhere.

A text message while I was leading the BBC in the Floyd Bennett region was Prospect first of the season PINE WARBLER in Vale of Cashmere Per Eddie Davis..also reported are continuing Pine Siskin and Ring-necked Duck
This is indicating that spring is slowly revealing itself with Pine Warbler reported today while my group saw Eastern Phoebe in Four Sparrow Marsh ( but the best bird was a soaring COMMON RAVEN at Floyd Bennett, my first for Kings County as well as for other trip participants).Check later the BBC field trips reports on the side menu for the day list .

New Wood Duck Box
Upper Pool's island received a permanent enhancement yesterday, a Wood Duck Nest box.Its best viewed from the back path.
Thanks to my co-worker Dave Chadwick with help from an intern who erected the nest box donated by Rob Bate.
We hope it would be occupied; even if it wasn't, its a nice ornament to view.
By the way, some interesting facts about Wood Duck boxes. There has to be at least 40 feet clearance in front of the nest hole, which the duck makes a straight beeline for...That's daring ya know?

by the way, Cypress Ave is a really terrific warbler spot with all the road line oak trees during late April into May.
Otherwise, ask for a fold up map from the guard at the main gate. But soaking rain is on the way.....

Just quick looks today, mostly the lake where continuing RING-NECKED DUCK lingers with a flock of Northern Shovelers and Ruddy Ducks. The Shovelers were scattered throughout the lake.
But of interest were the HOODED MERGANSERS, its flock sized increased to now 10 from previously reported 8, the flock hanging near Three Sisters Islands on the lake side or inside the strait. A nice sight to watch as they waded together.
On land, this morning , a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK seen flying in and perching on a locust tree on the south side of the Nethermead ( 3 Arches) Bridge. Just about all the time I had today. Tomorrow it's rain gear day...( perhaps a good time then to check the lake)

10 AM Sunday, March 6 - First Sunday Bird Walk
From Michele Dreger:
The Prospect Park Newsletter has the time of the walk at 10am.
If the weather is good, we will meet at the Audubon Center. I heard it will be raining. Hopefully, it won't rain until we finish our walk.
We will talk a walk by the lake to check out the gulls and ducks.
See you then.

An important conservancy org for birds and the latest on Bird Conservation non-funding
This a note about a terrific bird conservancy organization many of you may not know about and is worth saving as a bookmark. If we love the birds, we need to conserve and support.

Prospect March 2nd Great Egret returns and spring knocks early....(we hope!)
GREAT EGRET at Lake west shore..spring ?
Prospect Park saw its season's first GREAT EGRET at the west shore of Prospect Lake. This represents the earliest Great Egret on record for the park eclipsing the March 10th, 2004 sighting. Talk about an " early bird special".
On the lake also of note were 5 HOODED MERGANSERS and the drake WOOD DUCK, the latter at Three Sisters Islands with 3 of the Hooded Mergs, while 2 other Mergs were seen gliding on the now mostly open lake by ice islands and larger mass in the western section.
At the feeders, a COMMON GRACKLE kept at bay multiple Red-winged Blackbirds, commandeering the middle feeder.
Along the West shore Lake, at the phramite patches, SWAMP SPARROW .

New warbler reference for all you beginners and skilled birders to carry around.
When I was in Ohio last spring, I picked up a really terrific warbler 72 page color guide published by the Ohio Wildlife Agency. To keep my comments brief , click on the link to see for yourself. The first warbler species will show up the end of this month ( but not roaring in like a lion). Pine and Palm warblers are the early ones. Check out the great guide ( which will be also easily accessed on my blog's side menu "warblers id guidebook") and get ready in learning the warblers.
