Peter,
I spent 2 hours in Prospect Park today in the rain. Nothing really unusual to report, but some of the observed species made it suddenly feel more like winter:
- A small flock of shovelers was on the upper Lullwater with a lone coot.
- A single Pied-billed Grebe was on Prospect Lake.
- I tallied 4 sapsuckers, three of which were together in a tree near the ball fields.
- I counted 4 Winter Wrens spread out throughout the park.
Finally, the most telling sign was the presence of Dark-eyed Juncos and White-throated Sparrows. Brrrrr...

October 3rd Prospect "slow day..quite a fall-off"
It appears much of yesterday's stuff took off ..already : ( .Northeast wind and another impending storm system might have been a good cause for the "fall-off" of birds. John did see the lingering Gray-Cheeked Thrush.There are a few Brown Creepers ,a sign of late fall birds shifting of the guard. We will have to wait till the end of the week for perhaps high activity ( without high anxiety) ..But this latest report--Kathy Toomey came thru with a bird for the day : male HOODED WARBLER seen on the back path of Upper Pool

October 2nd, A pretty good day for real Fall stuff: various reports
Activity after the rain storm system and following northwest winds behind it produced richly. Wildflower /weedy areas at forest margins and edges showed much bird activity ( I assume everywhere besides Prospect, Greenwood etc) ; and the Breeze Hill dirt mounds harbored a few notable species where I had this morning White-crowned Sparrow , Lincoln Sparrow and Indigo Bunting among my best sightings.See also Purple Finches reported By Rob Bate by the Maryland Monument.
But most intriguing was a circling shorebird that tried to land on Center Drive west T flooded section along the horse trail while I was working supervising weekend woodland volunteers. Based on body size, darkish wings ( no wing stripe) and brownish uppers , it possibly might have either been Pectorals Sandpiper or Wilson's Snipe (most likely).But there were way too many people on the drives... Too bad...But one identified shorebird seen later was Solitary Sandpiper by me and Rob Bate , on the black plastic by the rink cove.
Greenwood Cemetery was reported highly bird active per Rob Jett ..see his report...Prospect Lake sees an increase in Northern Shovelers (54)
