Despite the gray skies + low temperatures compare with yesterday, the morning walk evolved into something amazing -bird wise-, with about 9 sps of warblers recorded, at least til midday (I missed the Prairie & Black-and-white, seen by Ed Crowne), but the one who made everyone running in PP, was the 1st for the season, a Worm-eating Warbler, seen around 8 am in the vale, foraging in the ground amid several WTSPs.

Other newcomers -at least for me- were House Wrens, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Yellow Warbler.

The numbers of Yellow-rumpeds were outstanding, and still some Pine, less Palm compared with yesterday.

A great day at PP. I started a little early than usual (7:30 am), and joined forces with a good number of birders.

The usual walk from Grand Army Plaza, Vale, Rick's Place, Ravine, Pools, Nethermead, Lullwater, Lily Pond, Peninsula, Lake, and back via Midwood.

The number of warblers sps have increased and the Yellow-rumpeds led the numbers of individuals, followed by Palms, and our 1st warbler at Vale was a Nothern Waterthrush. Later, at the Ravine, a gorgeous Black-throated Green was seen ( a little early, but also reported today from CP).

A Common Merganser flew over, and also 3 DCCOs over the Nethermead.  At least 2 Blue-headed Vireos were seen and 2 Barn Swallows were spotted checking the underside of the bridge at Lily Pond.  Also there, 1 Green Heron + 2 Monk Parakeets flew by.

A Male BEKI was spotted around Vale, later at the pools, and the Lily Pond.

There was a flock of 6 Purple Finches near the 3rd Street pathway that 
leads onto the east side of the Long Meadow. It was just after sunrise 
and one of three males was singing. Also, while trying to photograph a 
kestrel at Grand Army Plaza on Tuesday from approximately 5:30PM to 
6:00PM, I observed three separate flocks of Cedar Waxwings flying into 
the park. There was a total of about 30 birds.

Nice day to go to PP. As usual, I came to park via Grand Army Plaza, passing thru the Vale, Rick's Place, Ravine, the Pools, Nethermead, Lily Pond, Lullwater, Peninsula/Lake, and back home via Midwood.

As mentioned before, 4 sps of warblers were recorded today, being the Palm the most numerous, followed by Yellow-rumped, Pine, and 1 Northern Parula, taking a bath on the stream at the Ravine.

Also, as a first, was a 1 male Eastern Towhee seen near Rick's Place.  The pair of Wood Duck still around the upper pool, and the Blue-winged Teals, too.

Late today I went to PP looking for the HOWA that PD told me via text-mess.  No luck with that one, but Palm Warblers are everywhere, and also at least 2 Louisiana Waterthrush (1 by the pools, & 1 by the Lily Pond). I joined efforts for a while with S. Blogget & S. Whittle.

Also at the pools, 1 pair of Blue-winged Teal.

<<Here's my big news: on Saturday morning I was out in Prospect Park on
my own, hoping to see some of the newly arrived species. I got a
wonderful treat when I found a HOODED WARBLER on the ground/logs/low
bushes at the edge of the Midwood, near Central Drive. There were two
CAROLIA WRENS I was looking at when I caught sight of this bright
beautiful yellow flash and then saw the black facial/crown markings--I
looked it up in my Peterson's and it was so distinctive, I knew on the
spot that I had a Hooded (life bird for me!).

I don't know how to post to the nyc and NYS lists but if you think
that this sighting is worth reporting, please let me know how to do it
or else post on my behalf.

Text message: Steve Nanz reports BLACK VULTURE flyover with Turkey Vultures over Prospect Lake this morning. This sighting is the first one seen since May 22,23 1938

Later Details  : I spotted a Black Vulture in Prospect Park at about 8:00am. It circled for
about 15 minutes before I lost sight of it.

Also saw Blue-headed Vireo on Lookout Hill

Jett Comment: One unusual, early sighting was of a Northern Parula. It was singing and feeding among a flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers on the Peninsula Meadow, near the edge of the lake. The flock was foraging within a hophornbeam tree that has sprouted long, dangling, yellow catkins. According to "Bull's Birds of New York State", this would be an extreme inland date. April 27th 1994 is listed as the previous date.
