At the south edge of the ballfields while listening to the Metropolitan Opera stars rehearse at lunchtime,a Red-tailed Hawk  soared over us with a smaller bird attacking it. Initially we thought its was a Kestrel; but being too dark and showing tail banding, it turned out to be a Merlin. Pretty cool to see one now.

Thank you for the info on the Indigo bunting. He was in the Butterfly meadow this morning, atop the tall grass, eating the seed & perching on a low tree branch singing with great enthusiasm. He looked very blue, even in the shade.

Other sightings:

Baltimore oriole pair tending to nestlings at overlook

Barn swallows gathering feathers across the Lullwater for nest on Audubon center

Robin feeding a large insect to its baby 

Black-capped chickadee feeding baby

6/16 Indigo Bunting

Mary Eyster reported a male adult Indigo Bunting in Butterfly Meadow ( lower meadow atop Lookout Hill) this morning at 10:18 am. The bird was quite striking.

Another easy, and humid walk thru PP after the big rains of last night; Compared with yesterday's walk, today was almost the same; But the big differences today were 1 Eastern Wood-Pewee heard calling near the Vale, and 1 Great Crested Flycatcher seen around the Lullwater, and around Quaker Hill, at least 2 Wood Thrushes were singing quite loud.  Nothing special around the lake, Midwood, or the meadows.

Hi all:
As the Spring migration has stopped, and a good number of sps of birds already are attending their nests, other could be seen feeding the nestlings or fledlings.
Nothing out of context during my morning walk thru PP, from 7:30-10:30 am. But at the Vale, 1 perched RT Hawk was being mobbed by Robins & Grackles.
I saw 1 male Orchard Oriole carrying food, by the edge of the Long Meadow.

I went into Prospect Park late yesterday to check on the progress of 
our nestling Red-tailed Hawks. While watching the the nest I heard a 
familiar, but out of context song. A male Northern Parula was singing 
his heart out from a perch above the stream in the Ravine. He must be 
a member of that very rare sub-species of parula: "Parula americana 
procrastinatii". I don't imagine he'll have any chance of successfully 
finding a mate in mid-June, especially in Brooklyn, but he appeared 
upbeat and optimistic  ;-)
