4/23 : very rare Prospect BLACK VULTURE verified*

Gil Shrank, whom I met early this morning, has verified the BLACK VULTURE he saw with Matthew Wills.

This represents only I believe the 4th or 5th Prospect record which i have to check my office database;Here are Gil's and Matthew's accounts. P>

I saw the Black Vulture about 1/2 hour after I saw you. I was with another birder (name unknown, but a friend of Rafa's). The bird was flying over the Lullwater. It had all of the identifying signs, i.e., short tail, whitish markings on the underwings, frequent flapping. I have never seen one in Prospect before, but they are becoming more common north of here, in CT and MA. ... It made my day. To add to the list, we also saw a Parula from the same vantage point.

Great day to walk thru PP, nice temperatures, and good birding too.
My first surprise was 1 Northern Waterthrush at the Vale. A few minutes later, around the Ravine, 1 Louisiana Waterthrush & 1 Wood Thrush. At the pools, 1 male Ring-necked Duck, & 1 male Wood Duck. And lots of Palm Warblers.
By the edge of the Nethermead, 1 Northern Parula singing. From here along the Lullwater, Peninsula. At the Lake, at least 3 Tree Swallows, and many Barn Swallows. A lonely Laughing Gull showed for few minutes. Lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers.
Up to the Lookout Hill, no luck with the YTWA, but around the Maryland Monument, 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.
Breezy Hill, along the Lullwater, Boat House. 1 Pine Warber, near the bridge.
Lily Pond, Midwood, Rick's Place, Nelly's Lawn, Vale, & home.

Hi, Peter. Thanks for the message. I went to Lookout this evening and easily found the YTWA. It was about 5:45 pm and it emerged from the fenced-in white pines and the end of the butterfly meadow. There was also a Field Sparrow among the pines. Regards, Ed

Kingsboider note: The pines are Arleen's Pines, which is at the north end of the Butterfly Meadow (lower meadow of Lookout Hill) , within a fence enclosure.

Earth Day brings in a Prospect YTWA; also notable Snowy Egret, Solitary Sandpiper,NRW Swallow

During springs, birders eagerly await those special warblers that overfly their southern (northern boundary) ranges. Those warblers would be Yellow-throated , Prothonotary, Kentucky , Hooded ( despite many breed north of NYC, most Hooded are southern), and who knows maybe a Swainson ( a real mayhem if that is ever found here).

This morning, the "southern" treat was a Yellow-throated Warbler. Russ Alderson, a new member of my birding text message network whose number I have just gotten last week after our first meeting in person, came through with a textmezz report of the rare bird, seen at Lookout Hill's summit, along the upper edges of the southwestern slope. I was unable to get there at that time, due to a supervised Brooklyn Bird Club planting event. But after I finished my event, I came up to the spot near noon with Suzanne Ortiz, one of the volunteers. We searched for the bird. But to no avail initially near Butterfly meadow;we assuming it moved. But Suzanne went up to the original location on the summit and heard the bird. She relocated the Yellow-throated Warbler ! It apparently never moved , sticking to the Locust trees at that southwestern corner of the summit's road. It was a beaut...especially with 6 of us looking right at it.
