Wind prediction for Tuesday
Southwest winds forecasted for tonight into Tuesday. If you can play hooky, there's a good excuse for birders...

Prospect April 25th The Brewsters back , continuing warbler quality = 20 species
Before hilights I will report, a note about a "new" location that should warrant visits during the peaking season ( about now into May). Bordering outside the north Zoo fence is a new "Compost Depot" that is highly loaded with insects. Given warblers are insectivores, it wasn't surprising when I went thru this area after work, I found at least 9 PALM WARBLERS among the wood chips and mulch, joined in by several Yellow-rumpeds. Turn right or to the right of the Dongan Oak eagle monument and follow the new fence to the open gate.I went inside , no signs saying do not enter. I think this will be a bonanza spot with the open middle and trees on the perimeter. Go to my google maps Prospect for the location nicknames ( look up Dongan Oak).
Speaking of Dongan Oak, a reliable source Rob Jett knows says he saw the PROTHONOTARY WARBLER behind the minuscule monument , among various ground level warblers.A search by Rob and I later proved fruitless.
After work, in the area just south of the Rose Garden ( called Aralia Grove) , a WORM-EATING WARBLER enlighten me, seen feeding from a dead leaf at the base of a Sycamore , which is next to the majestic Willow Oak.Another Wormeating was reported on the Peninsula by Rob Jett and Rob Bate near where the two roads meet ( the "fork" ).
But the Robs came thru with a better bird , rarer in a sense: BREWSTER'S WARBLER. Likely a second Brewster's according to Rob based on different minute head coloration from the Cove bird over a week ago , I saw the bird in a multi flora rose bush with BLUE-WINGED and YELLOW WARBLERS. Like holiday ornaments, all three bright yellow warblers "illuminated" the rosebush, on the lake shore between the "thumb" and the point (Peninsula is shaped like a hand, see the map). That yellow scene isn't something seen too often.
Though numbers wasn't great regarding bird intensity , but other warblers fulfilled expectations.Species like BLACK-THROATED GREEN, PRAIRIE, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, NORTHERN PARULA, keeps the adrenaline going.
It would be impossible as the migration peak comes, to summarize everything, so pour ( not a word I want to use with more hard rain predicted later this week) over the list from birders afield. I will hilight what i can that i opine as quality.
Oh one more thing. I didn't have much birding time, just my lunch hour and after work shift ends ( at 3:30). Yet,I still managed seeing 14 species warblers. The late afternoon is a still productive period so if you are around, don't give up hope seeing the spring gems.Its just a matter of where to go. That's why this blog exists : to tell you where the hot zones are. Keep up the good reading..
Kingsboider note: I received Rob Bate's email of HORNED GREBE on Prospect Lake; quite a "catch" there given its very rare appearance in the park. There are less than 10 historical record for this species.

Peter,
I had no luck relocating the Prothonotary Warbler today.
One birder I spoke with reported that it was within a
mixed flock of warblers near the Dongan Oak monument.
We search for a long time but came up empty.
All was not lost, however, because there were lots of
other good birds around, including three Worm-eating
Warblers (Peninsula Woods, Aralia Grove and Vale of Cashmere).
I added 9 year birds to my Brooklyn list - Ruby-throated Hummingbird,
Bank Swallow, Blue-winged Warbler, Nashville Warbler,
Black-throated Blue Warbler, American Redstart, Worm-eating
Warbler, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Baltimore Oriole.

Warblers (Peninsula Woods, Aralia Grove and Vale of Cashmere).
I added 9 year birds to my Brooklyn list - Ruby-throated Hummingbird,
Bank Swallow, Blue-winged Warbler, Nashville Warbler,
Black-throated Blue Warbler, American Redstart, Worm-eating
Warbler, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Baltimore Oriole.
