Listowner Note:  A First Sunday walk from the boathouse this coming Sunday will focus on breeding bird nests. If you have seen any nests, esp among notable birds, let me know by Thursday eve. This weekend I will be away leading the club to Dutchess County, so I wont be able to post entries from Friday to Sunday except text messages I received , forwarded to my PPS blog. If nests replies received after I leave, contatct Heidi who is leading the walk.

Cheers,P.

Scott Whittle reported Yellow-bellied Flycatcher in the Lullwater.

Listowner note: Although the migration is surely waning down, nevertheless, one more good week for stragglers, and empidonax genus flycatchers will continue to stream though. Keep those reports coming until the "summer swoon" .Good boiding,P.

5/25 sightings inc 2nd Mourning Warbler

Hilights: Mourning Warbler (2nd bird, both seen today),Olive-sided Flycatcher, 20 species warblers;returning Common Nighthawks evening flyovers

From Rafael: Mourning warbler @ vale cashmere 2nd bird ?

site: Prospect Park
date: 25 May 2008
observers: Rafael Campos, Tom Stephenson, Dolores, Janet, Gayle & Xandra
As the morning started, about 5:30 am I heard my first warbler, 1 Magnolia in our backyard. Just before I met Tom, "the calls" of a Blue Jay while crossing Flatbush, distracted me, but when I looked back, the "Blue Jay" was not, it was a Mockingbird imitating the Jay calls. What a start!!!
As we started our walk thru PP we started hearing warblers everywhere, and of course seen then (some), but today my ears were a little more educated to discrimate and ID those members of the Parulidae family.
And again, our best warbler of the morning was 1 male Mourning, seen by the Vale of Cashmere. When I left PP, the number of warblers recorded for today, was 20 sps!!!

From Rob Jett:

Common Nighthawks seem to have made their annual return to brownstone
Brooklyn. This evening, while enjoying the acrobatics of a few dozen
Chimney Swifts, I heard, then saw my first nighthawk of the season.
The time was 7:58pm and, within a few minutes, he was joined by two
more peenting nightjars. For about 20 minutes I watched them swoop and
dive for insects in the airspace above the buildings along the west
side of Prospect Park.

Good birding,

Rob

Account on Vale of Cashmere Mourning Warbler from Janet Schumacher:

In case others are interested, this is a more detailed description of
where we saw the Mourning warbler this am.

I had the good fortune this morning to run into Tom Stephenson &
Rafael in the Vale. While we standing on that little corridor of
grass betw the Vale & Nellie's meadow, trying to get a new birder on
a Blackburian and a Bay breasted, Tom heard a Mourning warbler.
Rafael spotted it and then it flew up the hill, west side. So we went
around the big Tulip tree and up the paved path (with the benches)
and found it again. It was pretty active but easy to see because the
vegetation is relatively sparse there.  Later on, Tom located the
other Mourning in Midwood--I didn't see that one.
Ed, Phil & Bill had seen the Midwood Mourning warbler earlier. Did
Tom set a record--two Mournings in one morning in PP?

From Roberto Cavalieros:
Thank you very much for your help with my life mourning warbler;
excellent views of a beautiful bird; it was still there at 10:45 am. I
found the vocalizations (the second half) to be different from that in
birds.cornell.edu.
The bird stayed above 10 ft. all the time; I was expecting it close to
the ground.

From Rafael:

Date: 24 May 2008
Observers: Rafael Campos ,Ellis Clare, & Tom Stephenson
As a birder of many years, the eyes are the first tools you learn to use to find ears, next are the ears, which would help you to ID the sps of birds you hear but do not see easily.
As the years go by, is always good to have someone who have dedicated a good amount of time learning bird calls, and this is the case of TS.
Today I joined forces with him and Ellis, who came from Manhattan for an early morning walk thru PP.
Most of the birds recorded today were heard,a few of them seen. But the experience of hearingthose different calls, and ID them with the most amazing expert around PP, it was for me (and Ellis, too) like open a new world in birding.
No more c..., our best bird today was the Mourning Warbler in Midwood!!!
Also we had by the time I left PP (0845 hrs) 17 sps of warblers.
We have nice views around the Rose Garden of Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-Pewee, and Olive-sided Flycatcher.
Here is our partial list for PP, from 6:45 am thru 8:45 am:

From Monica Berger:

Hi Peter: At around 5:30 pm, I observed a Mourning Warbler in the brushy area at the top of the path leading to the Rose Garden. It flew over to the other side of the path towards East Drive. I was not able to relocate it. Monica

Listowner comment:  The earlier Mourning Warbler was seen about 10 am in the southern midwood. It's possible this bird moved into the Vale of Cashmere Rose Garden (higher ground) at the end of the day; Otherwise its a second bird.

5/22 sightings

From Rob Jett:

Peter,

Went to check on the hawks this afternoon. Here are my sightings. The
best was a Summer Tanager at the stairs next to the Nethermead bridge. Saw a pair
of Gray-cheeked in the Ravine, decided tomorrow early AM will go play
some Bicknell's songs and calls. See what happens.

A sitting Goatsucker species

A goat sucker species is sitting now on an ash like tree limb above the Binnen Pool, Left shore, 75 Feet up .Looks like a night hawk Peter

PS> After checking the field guide in the office, the species is a sitting Common Nighthawk. The barring in the front without a upper breast dark bar and no whitish/light throat and a small white patch on the wing tertiaries indicates the species.. To find it, go to the Binnen Pool main gate. Look up to the tree on left , an ash  frizzy type tree. Look for a DEAD Limb. Above this dead whitish limb is the limb I saw the Common Nighthawk. It looks like the limb has a "bump" , the CONH so well camouflaged.

Thanks to a new birder Tara Palmiter, who was kind enough to bring me to the spot after seeing the goatsucker fly unto the limb.Hopefully, it will be there in the early evening.

Other observers: Peter Dorosh, Inara Schwartz

here's a pictorial reference (NOT a photo from today)

You can see the white wing patch

More details on 5/18 Mississippi Kite

Listowner note:

The following note is a full account from Shane Blodgett, who along with Dale Dyer and Rafael Campos, three highly skilled birders who were the recipients of the 2nd record Mississippi Kite for Prospect Park, seen from the Nethermead Bridge (or Three Arches). Yes, remarkably, there was a first. From records I keep,

The first Mississippi Kite record in Prospect Park occurred exactly 58 years ago, from the Geoffrey Carleton compilation of Prospect Sightings of a Mississippi Kite that spent an amazing NINE days in Prospect Park from May 7th to May 16th, 1950.

I inquired to Shane more details on the last Sunday's sighting regarding the age, location and miscellaneous details. This is Shane's account.

Peter

Subadult - we were standing on the Nethermead arch and
I initially spotted the bird just coming over the
tree line in the direction of the Boulder Bridge-it was
soaring on a thermal, and I was struck by the gray
color of the back and some whitish markings that I
initially thought were the windows of a
Red-shouldered hawk. I also noted that it did not exhibit a
white rump of a harrier. The bird then tucked into a
glide angled on a path parallel to us and moving left
to right, passing over Midwood. It caught another
thermal and began to gain altitude over the Music
Pagoda and was in a full soar for the 1-2 minutes we
studied it before it disappeared over the horizon.
When I say over the Midwood, I meant that was the
direction we were looking, but the bird was quite
distant probably 3/4 mile.

What struck me most were the extremely long and
slender wings, the short outer primary, the battleship
gray body and head, the long tail that was so
gracefully spread (like the opening of a geisha's
fan). I actually could not resolve the banding on the
tail but Dale and Rafael were quite sure on that
point. I could see the outer tail feathers were edged
in white. The bird was also in active molt, missing at
least two inner primaries on each wing

What struck me more than anything was its smooth
flight and the fact i knew for certain that this was a
raptor I had never seen before. I have tons of
experience with both falcons and harriers and this
bird was most assuredly neither. I was the first to say
I thought it was Mississippi Kite and Dale concurred.
Rafael did so also after looking at field guides
