Here are today's Highlights: Good sparrows about 9 species total today, including rare CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, quality LINCOLN & WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. HOODED WARBLER tops the warbler list.

IN a bit of minor deja vu with Ball field fence enclosures , except this time at the west corner instead of last year's northeast corner-- and under cloudy , gloomy sky-- a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found  along the snow fence by Rob Jett; later the rare sparrow was re-found by Rob and Peter, around 4:45 ; again by Rob Bate around 6 pm. Look for Chipping Sparrows where the Clay -colored hangs out with ( Spizella species stick together).

Small pockets of sparrows were found at the rink, east Long Meadow at north Sullivan Woods, and of course , the Ball fields fence enclosure, where Savannah Sparrows dominate ; other spots had White-crowned Sparrow at the rink (2), and 1 at East Long Meadow. Lincoln's was along the chain link fence lawn  by the water. And for good warblers, HOODED seen by Rob on the low wildflower slope just south of the Maryland Monument. This bird was a female, traveling above the mid path above the Well house .

A recently fenced off area on the grass at the South end of the

baseball fields in Prospect Park has begun to attract sparrows. I

spotted a Clay-colored Sparrow at the location when several of the

birds hopped up onto the fence. The CCSP was associating with a small

flock of chippings. I also counted 18 Savannah Sparrows. The bird was

seen at around 3pm. I went back with Peter Dorosh at 4:15pm and

 it was still present.

One other interesting sighting was of a female Hooded Warbler on

Lookout Hill. It was foraging along the hillside at Lookout Hill just

south of the Maryland Monument. Most of the invasive trees have been

removed at that spot and this year the understory has developed into a

dense mix of snakeroot, asters, goldenrod, pokeweed and other

wildflowers. I had assumed that this was a very late date for a hooded,

but discovered that it is still more than a month short of the

7 November listed in "Bull's Birds".

Good birding,

Rob
