10/28 A miserable looking bird and a lesson in lighting storms

In this downpour, nothing living outside would appreciate the misery. Just after lunch, I was in the truck as we drove along Center Drive. Just past the hard curve along the Nethermead, my coworker spotted a hawk perched on the horizontal strut of a lamp pole, the bird very miserable looking, soaked in the pouring rain. It took me a few minutes, as I tried to first look at the bird through the windshield. But the distortion of the glass with a ten power was useless. Finally, risking raindrops on my head, I peeked out and looked again. Still couldn't confirm from the front though I knew what it likely was given its mid size and timing of the year. I told my co-worker to get past the bird ; seeing the back of the hawk confirm my suspicions. An immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. I really felt sorry for the guy.I don't blame him ( or her) for this day's misery and predicament.

ON a more ominous note, I can't stress enough the precaution folks must take being in the park during lighting storms.Fortunately a violent incident reaped no casualties (there were brave joggers running this morning. I was in the truck ( safely) around 8:30 am a quarter of a mile away in our nursery area called the propagation area when unexpectedly we all heard a terrific explosion of a lighting strike, very close to home. Obviously we knew some unlucky spot in the park maybe got zapped. Sure enough ,after departure from our nursery area, as we rounded the hard curve on the drive near Bartel Pritchard square, there was the unlucky casualty: a Tulip Tree, right next to the jogging/pedestrian lane in the drive, most of the tree gone , ruptured to the core, split down to the roots. The whole 2/3 of its top had disappeared--limbs, trunk pieces ,branches ,leaves scattered all over the ground and unto the West Drive. It was a scary sight and a hard lesson about the awesome power of lighting.(pictures on my cell phone, I'll see if I can download)

So, be careful out there.

10/25 sightings and RTHA

The soaring spectacle of 6 Red-tailed Hawks above Lamppost #249 took on a mighty showcase. Several of the hawks did maneuvers, one flew into the woods and re-emerged with flourish; there were entanglements, flyby theatrics, close encounters of the avian kind...you had to see it. It was likely as Shane mentioned to me a few of the resident Prospect hawks defending their turf from invading out of city migrating redtails .At one point, all six I saw ( later another birder said 7 total) came down low above the famous lamppost .If it wasn't a rarity on this very slow day, at least it was a great show nevertheless by the big raptors in their peak October appearance.

A leaf peeping hiatus...yes, again

Dear readers

I'll be away again this weekend for you guess it,a fall foliage excursion to the countrysides around Rhinebeck in Dutchess county. Hopefully, nothing rare down here when I'm gone. It's just a few days.

Till then, enjoy the crisp weather and fall moments

Peter

PS. The picture is from Franklin Mountain Hawkwatch in upstate Oneonta . on the trail 100 yards above the hawkwatch station. A really beautiful place!

Hi all:
A nice day to go birding, and PP was the best option near by.
The usual walk, I started by the Grand Army Plaza, up to the edges of Rose Garden, Vale, and went thru Rick's Place, Midwood, edged the Nethermead, and up to the Peninsula, where I did join forces with Gayle & Xandra (+ Quasi & Pip).
the most abundant bird sps to be notice this morning was Yellow-rumped Warblers, followed by Palm Warblers. Other sps were not as abundant, and Gayle & Xandra saw 1 Osprey around the lake ( I missed it!!!), also seen by other birders around the Park.
The last minute bird for us was 1 Savannah Sparrow seen foraging with a Song Sparrow at the Nethermead.

A major change to Peter's PP blog

Dear readers:

I was informed by AOL that the AOL Journals blog -- will cease to exist Oct 31st due to declining use by aol blogsters. If I didn't move the data from the old blog, i would have lost the ability to simply transfer to BLOGGER in one shot.( then its all manual after 10/31) .This blog is a bit different but better to have a reporting forum than nothing at all. The words ,birds, and commentary are the same, regardless of the format or blogster service (free of course) . There are some things i have to figure out, fine tune and retain the old links to the maps, etc. Here I ask your patience.

Best

Peter

Wednesday 10/8

I stayed along the Western edges of the Park today, mainly looking for Sparrows, which were in abundance in the Sparrow Bowl. I had little time, and was not able to id one or two interesting birds that droped into the tall grass at the edges of the bowl. There was a Lincoln's that popped up, and several Swamp. One that was intriguing was most likely a first year Chipping, but for a moment I thought it was Clay-colored. However, the eye line did continue to the bill.

Note: very sparrow day, should be good in the

along the shore , a porcelain berry vine
laden cherry tree had a Orchard like female
Oriole that would be way past late for this
species. With bold white wing bars, streaked
back and darkish gray green head on an all
yellow bird, I assumed a stray species.
But the bird didnt give me enough
time ( fleeting glimpses)to study as it
 moved atop the tree canopy.
It thereby flew across to the peninsula
east shore.Just at heads up if you go
birding there . Its prime time for vagant species

Mike Corzine's report on Connecticut warbler

Hey Peter!

After three weeks of working long hours in L.A., I made it out to the park late this afternoon. I went looking for the Connecticut Warblerand found him at about 5:15pm on Lookout, off the wood chip path that leads off to the right when going up the stairs from Center Dr. I saw him about 30 paces from where the path splits, on the upside of the hill. There's a splintered tree that only a woodpecker could love, and the beginning of a fence. He was foraging low.

Lots of black 'n whites and  black-throated blues, including an audacious comedian who came in close (about 2-3') to check out my new black and blue sneaks.

Peter's Note:  The last reported spot  from Mike's email would be to go up the stairs from the Center Drive/West Drive T junction, and go right on the 2nd mulch trail up the stairs. This would be the western-southwestern slope.Good luck.

also of note today with fallout: 18 species warblers.

Sunday Bird Walk and more reports ~18 species warblers

A downpour this morning delayed the start of the First Sunday Bird Walk in Prospect Park, but we met at 10 and definitely made up for lost time.  Not all the observers were present throughout the day (Mary was), and there were participants in the walk who are not listed.  The park was jumping with warblers, almost every spot was a "hot spot."
Lookout Hill provided the best rewards with a Connecticut Warbler and an Orange-Crowned Warbler.

From Alex Wilson:

Not too much activity in Prospect today, the highlight being a YELLOW-

afternoon. The overall mix is changing towards fall birds, with fewer
warblers and flycatchers in favor of more sparrows and raptors. The
autumnal trend should accelerate with cooler weather in the offing...
