5/8 Our big day approaches

The day before the May 9th Birdathon brings much anticipation and expectations.Whatever the outcome, I will appreciate the meaning of what this coming Big Day means, what we do , how we contribute to saving our birds and habitats in the years to come. It is our actions of today to bring awareness of how fragile our world is, that we must work together to ensure a brighter future for our natural world.

So, if you are out there, as you bird watch Saturday's International Bird Migratory Day, enjoy the beauty of birding, and the spirit of sharing the passion of birds with others. My five person team-Me, Mary, Sandy, Rafael, and Tom-- is ready and raring to go! We will cover only Brooklyn locations to celebrate the club centennial birding Prospect Park, Coney Island, Plumb Beach, Floyd Bennett Field, Paedergat Basin and Marine Park.We hope to do well and with much appreciation in being out there in the natural world. Do it for the fun of it....

Now for the lists and reports of today. To save myself time, as I must hit the pillows for my 4:45 wake up , i will list the reports with as usual the boldfaced type quality birds.I may not have much time tomorrow to post reports thru the day nor in the evening. Simply late Saturday nite, i will list the total my team achieved and hopefully see what the other teams fare for an overall total.

In the meantime, wish Brooklyn Bird Club teams well! and get yourself out there !

Good birding,

Peter

Rafael's backyard birds ( on Park Place) 3 postings

1)
Today (08 May 2009),with some Northern Orioles singing outside the window, at Park Place, Brooklyn; I went out to check the early morning birds sps (6:30-6:50 am), and getting a couple of nice surprises.
First, 2 sps of flycatchers: Yellow-bellied & Eastern Wood-Pewee.
Warblers, just 1 Northern Parula, male, singing.
Other sps: 5-7 Northern Orioles; 1 Catbird, 1 American Crow,& Gull sps (flyovers).
About 5:30 am, I heard 1 Wood Thrush.

2)
More observations from our backyard (7:15-7:35 am), and more different sps.
The Yellow-bellied Flycatcher is still around. But a new group of sps arrived.
First, 1 male Rose-breasted Grosbeak, then I noticed 1 female Scarlet Tanager.
At the same oak tree, 1 male Black-and-white Warbler, 1 female Black-throated Blue Warbler.
Thrushes: 2 American Robins, 1 Veery.
Also present, 1 Blue-headed Vireo.
My apologies for calling in my last email, Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) as "Northern Oriole".
Brooklyn is good birding: Rafael Campos

3)

As the day is start to fade away, the amazing day full of birds, has reached its end for our backyard.

Between 5 & 6 pm, the last bird sps I have recorded for Park Place, Brooklyn.

Another flycatcher surprise, 1 Least Flycatcher, and the Yellow-bellied is still around. The Veery is still here, and the male Wilson's Warbler was seeing looking for food around the Holly tree. 1 female Black-throated Blue Warbler, and I heard, from the distance, 1 House Wren.

To close the observations of this amazing day (08 May), 1 American Crow flew over, and some House Sparrows came to take a bath.
