A Birdathon challenge to my readers + my spring break

Next Saturday May 9th is International Bird Migration Day or simply "The Birdathon".Its a day to recognize the precarious challenges our wild birds face , thru habitat loss, survival detriments like pollution and lights, structural barriers ( like cell phone towers), reflective building glass, feral cats, and so on.

The Birdathon , though a competitive contest in some aspects , is really a fundraising event done under the auspices of conservation. http://www.birdday.org/

This year, to celebrate the Brooklyn Bird Club's 100th year, my team of Sandy Paci, Mary Eyster, and Rafael Campos aka "the Kingbirders" will do our best to achieve an objective 120 species in Brooklyn based habitats: starting in Prospect Park, then Plum Beach, Floyd Bennett Field, Marine Park and Paedergat Basin in our cause to restore a section of the critical birding habitat ,Prospect Park's Vale of Cashmere into a bird attractive native plantings project.

For as little as 5 , 10, 15 , 25 dollars or whatever amount , you can pledge to helping me restore this section of the Vale of Cashmere. ( you could also pledge a said amount per bird species) Checks written out to the Prospect Park Alliance will all be steered to my office-- the Landscape Management Office budget for the plant order. On the check memo line, write "Birdathon Plantings". The gift manager has received my instructions to collect all amounts for my office budget for a fall 2009 planting. Most native plant pots cost 5 dollars ( we receive discounted costs) so if we raise $2000.00, that's 400 plants!

Let us impress the park administration and NYC birders of our birding community's concern for urban habitats and Prospect Park's significant locale for migratory birds. Already , this spring has proved it tremendously with Tonwsend's Warbler, American Bitterns, Red-Tailed Hawk nestlings (chicks born) and at least 28 species warblers so far the cream of the spring crop.

If you desire to make a pledge, please email me at prosbird@aol.com

Many thanks for your continuing support for Brooklyn birding and Prospect Park birds.'

( and so far, thanks to my 2009 contributors and pledgers: Nancy,Julia,Karen, Valerie, Rusty, Ida, Janet, Elizabeth, James, Gil, Suzanne, and Lenore)
