Raptor mystery

I received some pictures from a birder i know casually -David Chorlian, who , along with wife Helen, saw a raptor bathing in the Upper Pool on Thanksgiving Day. Right now, i am in a friendly debate over the hawk's identity which isn't unanimous...yet. My slight leaning is Northern Goshawk but a few friends think Coopers and or Northern Harrier. I am still waiting for more details and opinions. The photograph's quality isn't the greatest since it was taken from a long distance and photoshopped. But in the meantime or anytime, if you happen to be in the heavily wooded Ravine area or the pools (or Midwood, Lullwater) , keep your eyes open; that or not in Prospect,Goshawks love to stay reclusive in heavily wooded habitats. Drop me a line if you are successful seeing any Red-tailed sized bird with a quite L-o-o-o-n-n-g-g -g wide tail. (Peter Dunne of "Hawks in Flight" calls the big raptor " a flying stovepipe" cause of its wide big body and almost equivalent tail width). Goshawks are a tad larger than Red-tailed Hawks; Cooper's Hawk is slightly larger Crow size. (last year there was an immature goshawk frequenting the Lullwater /Breeze Hill area ,around the feeders)

Red-throated loon on the lake

There wasn't much to report today on this very wet day. Too busy working didn't afford me much time nor desire to bird in wet clothes. But seeing a Red-throated Loon very close to the shore is a nice moment to savor. En route homeward from work, i took my normal path along the south shoreline, searching valiantly for the loon to get the record in, i found instead the relaxed Loon right behind Three Sister Islands western island, in the back channel mouth, just about 20 feet from the mainland. I watched the special bird for this park from the path, knowing and hoping it'll stick around for the Christmas Bird Count. It's a long way off, but it looks like our loony guest is quite comfy in Prospect Lake confines. Right at home for sure.

 From Rob Jett:

I spent several hours yesterday in Prospect Park and had a few interesting highlights to report. It could have been a "Blue" theme in celebration of Sunday's incredibly blue sky. While standing near the Wellhouse in Prospect Park, Gerry Layton, Rob Bates and myself watch a Blue-headed Vireo, Eastern Bluebird and Black-throated Blue Warbler feeding near the ground. At one point, we had all three species in a single field of view! If that wasn't enough, a phoebe sallying from a perch in an adjacent Szechuan Peppercorn tree completed the warm weather illusion. The bluebird was seen later in the afternoon feeding along the edge of the Peninsula Meadow (just across the road from the Wellhouse).Another interesting note is the continuation of a Red-throated Loon on Prospect Lake. That bird was first reported on 11/16.

what is that odd duck ?

I dont know if anybody have noticed but since late summer I think, there has been a heavy "metallic" shiny dark green duck hanging along the western shore of the Lake. I received an inquiry a day ago asking me what it is or if its native. Well, obviously its an "exotic" or domestic of sorts. I thought I take a lucky guess and search Google for any identity . I think I might have hit my mark. From below website link inserted, there is a duck category called "Cayuga" ducks and right there is a probable identity : Black East Indian duck ? well, hopefuly, that solved it, I "quacked" the mystery ? ( excuse my pun ;)>)

11/19 " Boy, its cold out there ..but the good stuff rolls in.."

Highlights for this day: Orange-crowned Warbler, Horned Lark, Pine Siskin, continuing Red-throated Loon,American Tree Sparrow, a marooned Raccoon?

From Alex Wilson:

There were a good variety of late-season birds on hand today in Prospect Park, a sharp drop in temperature notwithstanding. An ORANGE- CROWNED WARBLER near the Lily Pond was perhaps the “best” of the day, but the continuing RED-THROATED LOON and a single HORNED LARK on the Long Meadow are actually rarer for the location and both were new park birds for me. Also uncommon for Prospect were an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW and one PINE SISKIN among many Goldfinch.

On another note, I’ll be leading a bird walk this Saturday, 11/22 as part of a performance art event drawing attention to Calvert Vaux/ Dreier-Offerman Park, a project by Brooklyn artist Dillon de Give. Further information on this all-ages event is available at:http://www.implausibot.com/bird.html

From Rob Bate:

Peter,I saw the RTLoon but none of the other rarities. I did spot a Blue Headed Vireo in the pennisula meadow, I assume that is an out of season bird. Thanks for the tips. Rob

From Peter:

A highlight for me was a Raccoon looking right at me from the middle island of Three Sisters Islands as I walked home from work. First I've seen on the islands. Hope he has a boat, the water must be frigid.....

11/18/08 sightings inc East Bluebirds and RTLO

Two reports texted to me today of 4 Eastern Bluebirds and continuing Red-throated Loon
hi lighted the day's report for Prospect Park.

Eddie Davis texted me 3 ish of 4 uncommon Eastern Bluebird (eabb) at Lamppost #249 along the Well Drive, the birds seen from the Upper Lookout path. I swung by and saw 2 in the barren ash tree but the twosome flew across where three (2m,1 f) were seen in the Beech Trees right above the Well Drive opposite the famous lamppost. The Beeches are adjacent to the phragmites , where also a pedestrian path is . The time was 4:15 . EABB might be the year's first after i check the records.

Rob Bate had the still present Red-throated Loon at 3:30 along the south shore between Three sister islands and West Island.

ON my way home I saw Hooded Merganser and Bufflehead drakes. A short list coming up soon after I get back home.

Lots of goldfinces around...

Redthroated Loon records in PP

Yesterday's Red-throated Loon was the 8th record for Prospect Park. Now ...thats rare. Normally Common Loon is our more usual species but a Red-Throated Loon hits the bell.
Here are records I brought up plus a link from Picasa from my friend Doug Gochfeld. Its a cool thing to have rare visitors to Prospect this time of the year ( or anytime !).

11/16 reports inc Red-Throated Loon

More commonly seen on coastal waters but rare to see based in a city lake, I found a Red-throated Loon this morning on Prospect Lake between West Island and Three Sister Islands.Word went out and subsequent reports followed the loon drifting all along the south shore , behind Duck Island until the Red-throated Loon did a "U" Turn at the Terrace Bridge in the south Lullwater, where a number of us watched the bird --at one point- only 20 feet from us. For a quite reliable sighting elsewhere, in Prospect park, its a good quality "park lister" .

Last report , the loon was found nearer West Island, seen from the benches there, the loon out farther on the lake.

Good birding
