Request for weekday volunteers; bird reports inc PP FOY Green Heron
This morning, I spent an hour digging out Japanese Knotweed, a very stubborn, aggressive " pain in the tail " weed that spreads through its Rhizomes ( root system) making it a very difficult weed to eradicate. It takes a long term process and dedication to minimize or control it. I got most of the largest shoots but will need help from any volunteers for the smaller ones ( maybe about 125) for an hour to alleviate the burden upon the Alliance park staff needed for other park tasks.
here's the weed: http://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/plants/knotweed.shtml
http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/wq/plants/weeds/aqua015.html
I asked my supervisor to allow me to meet with any volunteers who show up and give them a tutorial for 15 minutes; tools and plastic bags will be provided. If you can , show up at the Vale of Cashmere water fountain (south end of pool) at 10 am this coming Tuesday (4/13). After my short tutorial , I will have to take off for another area to prepare for a planting project.Hopefully, with help from the birders, we can adopt this site as our bird garden ( like the Butterfly Garden started by the Brooklyn Bird Club atop Lookout Hill from the 1970's) and not have to redirect resources from the Natural Resources Crew. Thanks

From Peter:
An interesting sighting, a really tough bird to identify for beginners and many others, a first year female PINE WARBLER seen hanging out at the Binnen Run , behind the Pagoda Bandshell. Best views at the well known bird bathing spot that's quite protective for birds (esp warblers), is from the horse trail ( you would be facing the Pagoda). Here's a photo from the Warbler Page website
of that bird I saw today

Easter Morning Prospect April 4th

Rambling birdsong pierced this holiday morning , with enveloping early foggy mist burned off by mid-morning. As is usually my personal tradition, the Easter sunrise was obviously obscured,so I slept another hour instead of a very early start watching the sunrise over the lake. A slow start, yet things picked up through the hours. My first sightings of LAUGHING GULL (P.Dorosh)was first a flyover at Lamppost #249; however, one floated on the lake .Excellent reports afield of PINE WARBLER numbers (particularly Lookout Hill by the First Sunday Group led by Eni Falci); ORANGE-Crowned Warbler (Keir Randall) reported at Nethermead Arches north stairs sounds like this winter rarity is finally moving on after a long hiatus in the Lullwater.[ OCWA is very rare spring migrant] A report of Rusty Blackbird at the Ravine Pool (Rafael Campos), Chipping Sparrows on the Nethermead northwest field, Palm Warblers along the back path behind Upper Pool ; Besides Chipping, sparrow diversity is newsworthy with also Swamp,Savannah , Song, White-throated ,Dark-eyed Junco,Field & Eastern Towhee among today's observed sparrow species totaling 8 ; and a five- woodpecker species milestone reported by Michele Dreger in the First Sunday Group also made the notable hilights.
A warm spell predicted to reach the low 80's this week is a good sign for migration numbers to pick up ( we hope). Enjoy your holiday and this early week's offerings of birds.

I saw a moment ago 1 Dark-eyed Junco, perhaps the last one for the season. Spring arrived, and also I saw 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, and 1 Hermit Thrush.A pair of American Crows are nesting near the Saint Francis Church on 6th Ave. I have seen them carrying sticks, several times.

Subject: Prospect Park Migrants
From: Vinny Pellegrino
Date: Fri, 2 Apr 2010 10:40:20 -0700 (PDT)
I headed West to Prospect Park this morning. There was a good flight of birds with five species of warbler recorded: 1 Palm warbler, 1 Louisiana Waterthrush, 1 Orange-crowned warbler, 5 male Pine warblers, and several Yellow-rumped warblers. All of these birds were viewed near the Audubon's Center and Lullwater area. The Pine warblers were singing but the others were not very vocal except the "chip" of the waterthrush. Other birds of note included a Hermit thrush, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 3 Eastern Phoebes, and a few breeding-plumaged Ruddy ducks.

From Rob Bate:
Highlights besides the Orange-crowned Warbler were many Phoebes, Flickers and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. 7 flyover DC Cormorants, 1 Yellow Rumped Warbler, 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet. Also the Phoebe was singing and apparently nest building under the Binnen Bridge just like last year.
Rob
Kingsboider note: Orange-crowned was in the north Lullwater side, I gather. The Lullwater has been its fave hangout.
