April 2nd Prospect

A good 0:-) Friday by collective birders today. Reports of increased numbers of Pine Warblers at different locations. The Louisiana Waterthrush (LOWA) was seen at the Lower Pool, chipping loudly at a perched Merlin according to Shane Blodgett; another LOWA seen near the Boathouse (V.Pellgrino) . Palm Warbler (V.P.; E.G., K.T.) at the Lullwater Cove point, from the trail there (across from the Rustic Arbor); very near, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (V.P.) lingers in the Lullwater faithfullyy for at least a month now.

Other sightings at the Pools: f/o Turkey Vulture, Belted Kingfisher. Elsewhere, American Kestrel reported along with typical early spring migrants.

The southern air flow will produce migrant movement this weekend. The gorgeous weather will bring out the crowds , so dodge your steps, do your birding early.

I saw a moment ago 1 Dark-eyed Junco, perhaps the last one for the season. Spring arrived, and also I saw 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, and 1 Hermit Thrush.A pair of American Crows are nesting near the Saint Francis Church on 6th Ave. I have seen them carrying sticks, several times.

Subject: Prospect Park Migrants
From: Vinny Pellegrino
Date: Fri, 2 Apr 2010 10:40:20 -0700 (PDT)

I headed West to Prospect Park this morning. There was a good flight of birds with five species of warbler recorded: 1 Palm warbler, 1 Louisiana Waterthrush, 1 Orange-crowned warbler, 5 male Pine warblers, and several Yellow-rumped warblers. All of these birds were viewed near the Audubon's Center and Lullwater area. The Pine warblers were singing but the others were not very vocal except the "chip" of the waterthrush. Other birds of note included a Hermit thrush, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 3 Eastern Phoebes, and a few breeding-plumaged Ruddy ducks.
