Conservation : A letter from AMNH ; Great Gull Island fundraiser

http://www.greatgullisland.org/  (clickable)

Dear BBC members and Brooklyn birding friend:

I received a personal letter from Helen Hays , Ornithologist for American Museum of Natural History and Chairman of the Great Gull Island Project. She is initializing a fundraising campaign . The letter below explains the purpose. Although I have never been to Great Gull, it is a fantastic place as mentioned from various sources. Hopefully, I can get there soon perhaps if I am around arrange donors to car pool in July..we'll see then.. If you would like to contribute --even if in small amounts,to this wonderful cause, mention that you are a Brooklyn Bird Cub member or in support of the BBC. Cumulatively, we can add it up !

The AMNH was a grand place to see birds in their exhibit displays as I recalled in my early youth (well still is) . In addition, with approval from the Brooklyn Bird Club council, we can add to the funds for a new Observation Blind .  Thanks,  Peter  ( I gave $50.00 already for a start so only 450.00 to go.)

P. S> This may become a Birdathon IBMD ( http://www.birdday.org/) fundraising drive for the BBC to adopt , the Birdathon done annually in May, this year the 20th IMBD anniversary falling on May 12th. So, either now or later..... also, I invited Ms Hays to present an eve program for us, likely in early Fall.. stay tune for the spring newsletter  in April and our website calendar on this proposal..

**
Helen Hays letter to me:

Mr Peter Dorosh
President
Brooklyn Bird Club

Dear Peter:

Spring migration is nearing and avian visitors of all colors, sizes, and sounds will appear shortly. Flocks of terns will arrive to nest on Great Gull Island at the eastern end of Long Island Sound. We need your help in welcoming them.
Great Gull Island, a 17- acre island owned by the American Museum of Natural History ,is a research station where we have worked for 44 summers.Over 9,500 pairs of Common Terns, probably the largest colony of this species in the world, nest there as do over 1,300 pairs of the endangered Roseate Tern, the largest nesting concentration of this species in the hemisphere.

Observation blinds there were built between 1980 and 1984 need to be rebuilt and I would love to start replacing them this spring. The blinds are important for monitoring the colony, behavioral; studies as well as photographing different sections of the island. The wood for each blind cost about $500.00 . In recognition of a donation of $500.00 or more from your organization or from an individual , a naming plague will be affixed to a respective blind. It would be wonderful if the Brooklyn Bird Club or an interested individual could sponsor blind, but it would also help , if this is not possible , if a contribution of any size could be made toward the blind rebuilding project.

We will have a day trip to Great Gull Island for donors to the rebuilding project to see the progress made with the blinds, meet the researchers and see the terns, their chicks and young.
Please visit our website www.greatgullisland.org , for more information about Great Gull Island Project. Also, please feel free to call me if you have specific questions about making a  donation. In the meantime, I have included a return envelope for your Convenience and hope the Brooklyn Bird Club will become a part of the Great Gull Island Project's donor family. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely
Helen Hays
Chairman, Great Gull Island Project

Hi Peter,

Here is today's list.  I did not go by the Lake.  Most notable for me was more Red-Bellied Woodpeckers than Downy WPs.

Best,

Prospect Feb 23rd, some early signs of spring

As I mentioned in my last post , the word "transition" exhibited subtle signs today, with expressed movements of spring in the air..Never mind the warm, yet windy weather, but birds. Usually, although we are not keen to waterbirds, focusing on songbirds, spring migration takes hold first with the waterbirds, namely geese  and ducks.

This morning, two bird species were spotted as i was  riding along in the work truck. Going along Well drive, 5 geese flew over the lake western sector, with very short necks that alerted me to overflying BRANTs. A short while later, along the path  beyond the Maryland Monument where my crew was working dragging out old brush, I again spotted overflying birds, two ducks that I "bin" quickly, WOOD DUCKs a mixed pair making headway somewhere.

Later, after work , I re found the Wood Ducks , claiming the water spot under the boughs at 3 Sisters islands occupied by yesterdays Ring necked Duck and Hoodies Mergansers.  In a pretty impressive showing again for winter I think ( what? the 4 or 5th time so far?) , a mixed pair of LESSER SCAUP stayed close to the Well Drive shoreline, close enough to see the head shape which wasn't very prominent but the sun rays helped, allowing me to see the drake's purplish head sheen.

Prospect February 22nd

These last days of winter is obviously a transition time and its quiet in Prospect. With a few weeks left of winter, we await the early spring migrants. For now , the usual species of the lake will suffice for seeing. There, a lone RING-NECKED DUCK drake along with the pair of HOODED MERGANSERS under the boughs at Three Sisters Islands offers the best interest.

By March 21st, the feeders will come down; so enjoy the next few weeks here.

I was in the city today, so I took a walk for a couple hours in the park.  Good to be back for a little bit. Nothing exceptional, but I did see two of the Hoodies over by 3 Sisters.

February 20th Prospark /BBG

A very late walk into Prospect  after a day in the Garden to get the last  hour of daylight on this very nice day rewarded me with BUFFLEHEAD on the Lake. Actually it was a pair just inside the Peninsula thumb , as I saw afar from the lake west shore. A closer look from the Peninsula confirmed the identification. Close by, a pair likewise of HOODED MERGANSERS offer the best looks for birds of my late entry in the park.

Earlier, we could see the PEREGRINE FALCON claim high perch on the BBGarden radio tower. Also, after late lunch in the cafeteria, I spotted an adult RED-TAILED HAWK fly in and perch on the famed Daffodil  Hill oak which its exotic name I forget....

1st day GBBC 2/17

I submitted my first Great Backyard Bird Count list, today for Prospect.

The puzzling thing is the lack of passerines ( my whole lunch hour not seeing one !) .. No sparrows, no cardinals, little of else...weird..It must be February then... BUT two Coopers hawks, 2 RedTailed Hawks, a Peregrine on the BBGarden tower ( lowest tower wing strut)..Feeders had most of the passerines and woodpeckers...

3/5 Dedication date for Marty Sohmer memorial bench

Marty Sohmer was a legendary Brooklyn birder, so I am posting this info .I cant post a photo here so if you want to know what he looks like, email me at Prosbird@aol.com

Posting From today's Ebirds Yahoo group :

Dedication of Central Park bench for the late Marty Sohmer

Wed Feb 15, 2012 8:29 pm (PST)

Many of you remember the late Marty Sohmer, one of the best beloved birders in the metro area and an all-around fine human being. And you may remember a fundraising drive back in October to "adopt" a Central Park bench in his honor.

We are pleased to announce that the bench will be dedicated on the morning of Monday, March 5, with an informal ceremony in the Central Park Ramble. Join us at the Central Park Boathouse, where promptly at 8 AM we'll make our way the short distance to the bench. Everyone is welcome, whether you knew Marty or just want to get to know him through those who loved him. Bring your best Marty stories and/or, if you like, something non-alcoholic with which to toast this warm, generous, one-of-a-kind character who frequented both Central Park and Prospect Park, taught a lot of us so much of what we know about our birds, and played a big part in fostering the community atmosphere that prevails in our metro birding circles.

We hope to see you all there.

Reports rec'd while I was away

Just back last nite after leading the Brooklyn Bird Club 3 day to East End Long Island ( Montauk, Orient Point). List later on the trips blog.  Here are reports received during my Brooklyn absence:

From Matthew Wills:

Hi, Peter,

Just sent this to ebirds, giving you a head's up on possible BK raven:

This morning at approximately 7:05 I opened the shutters to see the usual commute of Ring-billed gulls and my eyes were pulled to two black birds chasing an even larger one down Washington Avenue in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. At first I assumed it would be two crows mobbing a Red-tailed hawk, but the chased bird turned into the slanting rays of the sun and revealed itself to be black. Heard one vocalization as they all three hurried out of sight towards the south: American crow. I did not get a chance to note anything about the larger bird's tail. It could very well have been two Fish crows harrying an American crow, but the size differential was quite notable. The birds were heading in the general direction of Prospect Park.

Best,
Matthew

Green-winged Teal on Prospect Lake; report

Adam Welz reports the uncommon species GREEN-WINGED TEAL on Prospect Lake this early afternoon. His report below.

notes: Many Canada Geese -- an unprecedented 3 with coded neck collars!
- Green-winged Teal male in br plumage with a group of Ruddy Duck
- 4 raptor species!
- no House Finch, possibly due to the fact that a young Cooper's Hawk was at the feeders, where I normally see them. It made a few passes at some chickadees, but seemed frustrated by the umbrella over the feeders and flew off.
- 24 American Crow seen in a single flock, at least 5 other crows seen elsewhere earlier, not sure if part of the same flock.

Cheers

Adam

Wind farms and their impact on birds

American Birding Conservancy issued a page on Wind Energy ( commendable for green alternatives) which they call for safeguards for birds ( Bird Smart!). This item usually appears on my Conservation blog ( sidebar)  but this is an important issue (like glass impacts) . It warrants a mention here.

Read the link (click on it) attached and send the format letter....We each have to do our part besides just being birders...

Important news about Floyd Bennett Field

See my Conservation Blog post about Floyd Bennett Field and possible gas facilities impact if a U.S.Congressional bill passes....scary...

http://bbcnewsboard.blogspot.com/2012/02/future-corporate-takeover-of-floyd.html

--KB

Post addendum

I received a link that the House of Representatives passed the bill mentioned in the above link. Its up to the US Senate to comply . Apparently a 3 mile long Gas pipe will be built with  it going thru one of the decrepit hangars for metering and transfer facility. Supposedly there is supposed to be some money set aside for Floyd Bennett improvements . Lets hope so...who knows with the way these political things go. But still , it's a bad precedent for corporations to use parkland for their right of way...

Here's the link of the latest

My Jan 28th Greenpoint walk

Last weekend I led a bird walk for a wonderful group of young , enthusiastic birders. The area is seeing more attention as a great place to live and as a result, more shore parks are coming into creation. ( The "G" train runs thru that area , from Park Slope). There are great Polish shops and food places....

Here's the link to the story in the community paper.

http://www.greenpointnews.com/news/4162/greenpoint-a-haven-for-birdlife

 the parks are listed below

1. India St Pier -  Ferry to NYC points stop here, terrific views...
2. Transmitter park (its closed but fenced and located at the west terminus of Greenpoint Ave. Under    Construction)
3. Bushwick inlet, (again fenced but its on the way to McCarren)
4. McCarren Park - Red Tailed Hawk Pair

5. McGolrick Park - Woodpeckers

Prospect Feb 5th

Today's most noted hilight was the two PEREGRINE FALCONs on the Brooklyn Botanic Garden south radio tower. One falcon perched on the top floodlight; a short while later, the second- the female ( by size)  perched on the lower strut framework but then flew up to the higher perch above the floodlight bird. I enjoyed this spectacle while eating breakfast at Wendy' my window view of the falcons; very entertaining.

RUSTY BLACKBIRD reported at Nethermead Arches.

Two early GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS appeared in the north end of the Vale Cashmere pool, within an active bird spot.

Prospect Lake Feb 3rd

Winter on Prospect Lake is enjoying a good start with LESSER SCAUP (LESC). In the third time for this species in this budding season , 3 LESC drakes were reported by Adam Welz mid afternoon; after Adam's text, I sauntered outside to the park and found the three scaup in the Lake middle , those scaup quite illuminated by the setting sun. Next to them, a mixed pair of HOODED MERGANSERS and one RUDDY DUCK added some appreciation .

RING-NECKED DUCKs, only 4 I saw, were distant, in the Peninsula cove and south lakeside. A lone PIED-BILLED GREBE is all that's left from December's flock.

Best way by the way  in differentiating the two scaup species is looking at the head shape or profile. Greater's is round, Lesser's is less round, peaky..

here's more help with a terrific photo species head comparison..you can see the head shape difference

GHD: WWXB records for Prospect; Prospect reports

Today is Groundhog Day. Will it be spring early or more winter ?  ( I thought Spring started yesterday ! and we get a WWXB ..Confusing...)

From the office records,a search of the White-winged Crossbill for Prospect Park is generated.
See the list below. Please note that the date's ending digits for the first birds are actually early 1900, 1909 (dark blue hilight)

Many records were lost in the first half of the 20th century.

As mention in my earlier post, yesterday's WWXB is Prospect's first since winter 1964. Generally speaking yesterday;s bird would be the 6th appearance for Prospark.
