From Peter

Gray skies and blustery winds makes one want to stay indoors. But I had the day off and not wanting to drive anywhere but simply relax made Prospect Park an easy choice. With the fall foliage, I could not beat the colors especially with an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER lurking around. ;)>

Hoping to find something good, the usually reliable locale --the Peninsula sumacs-- was one of my targets. This hasn't been a great fall at those sumacs, numbers usually very low to my liking but I'll take whatever the sumacs yield. By the Persimmon Tree enclosed by a wire fence, I approached the back fence and "pished" a few times. Cardinals flew around and one HERMIT THRUSH appeared in the Herculaneum "Devil's Walking Stick " type tree with its delicious red berries. But nothing else then. Another pish and suddenly a kinglet sized bird flew towards me , and landed in a young oak sapling. It allowed me a few seconds to see what it was and a well seen ORANGED-CROWNED WARBLER is what it was. A handsome bird , especially for this warbler lover.

It was few pickings out there on this chilly day ( and I had to go to the store and buy gloves) . A Ring-necked Duck there, and the rest ,usual suspects abound.Oh, i did see a mass of AMERICAN ROBINS moved thru the brush behind the Wellhouse. I thought that was a notable observation for the numbers so far this fall. The slope there is a terrific spot to bird if you can see anything. ( well, one Gray Catbird, fitting for the day's light). Tomorrow is another day, especially rainy weather predicted in the next day or so.I can't wait then to find a good bird or two usually surfacing in bad weather.

From Rob Bate:

Could not locate the O-C Warbler, maybe caught a brief look at his back. However, I did get my FOS Fox Sparrow in that area as well as seeing Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Golden Crowned Kinglet and Hermit thrush along with Cardinals, White Throats and Doves. Very quiet elsewhere

Kingsboider note: the area is the Peninsula Sumacs
