May 5th Prospect & GWC reports; BBC thurs walk results

From Mary Eyster:

The hot spots were the base of the Golden Stairway [16th st/PPSW ave entrance] , then the path below the cemetery, and all around Lookout, especially the lakeside which was more protected from the wind. In that area I had: CYT, Prairie, Parula (abundant throughout), Black and White, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Chestnut-sided, Nashville, Ovenbird, and on the southwest slope of Lookout (above the Wellhouse) Cape May, Redstart, as well as the others already mentioned. Other birds seen in the area were Towhee, Purple Finch and about 50 Chimney Swifts.

BBC Thursday walk
Leader: Tom Stephenson

Hi Peter,

It turned out my meeting was delayed until the afternoon so I was able to attend part of the walk today. Ed co-led and then took over after I left and he may have sent you a list.

We had about 20 people for the walk, and it was definitely birdy in most of the park.

Here's what we saw when I was there plus a WOEWA and WHCRSP Ed had on his way to meeting place. Highlights, maybe Cape May Warbler at MD Mon, Indigo Bunting on path just L from monument. 17 species of warblers including early Blackpoll.

See you in the park.

Best regards,

Tom

From Rafael Campos:

05 May 2011

SITE: Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY

Observers: the group of bird-watchers who participated in the walk from the "Brooklyn Bird Club"

Time: 0700-1130 hrs

The group got together at Grand Army Plaza (13+ participants + 1 leader, & 2 field assistants). Our route took us along the Vale, the "compost pile by the Zoo, Lily Pond, Lullwater, Lake, Lookout Hill, Pools.

This time, the warblers were more vocal, and we heard a lot of species (thanks to Tom S.). Among them were at least 2 Blackpoll, 1 Cape May Warbler, 1 Magnolia, 1 Chestnut-sided, Redstart, Prairie. In total the group recorded 16 sps of Warblers (we missed Blackburnian, reported by E. Crowne early)

Others sps were at least 3 Indigo Buntings, 2 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, 4 sps of swallows, all of them flying over the lake: Tree, Rough-winged, Barn & Bank (Sand Martin).

Some other notables were: Scarlet Tanager, Swamp Sparrow, Wood Thrush, Veery, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Turkey Vulture (1 flew over Nethermead), Solitary Sandpiper (1 flew over Maryland Monument).

A great walk, and remember Brooklyn is great Birding: Rafael Campos R
