Prospect May 2nd: late afternoon great timing, Pool magic, rarities continue

Mornings are not always the best time for birding; there is afternoon magic as well. You just have to go out there and find out.I hit it perfectly when I finished work at 3:30.

At the Esdale Bridge, the entrance to the Ravine, a proud pet project of mine flourished. Between 4 pm and 5pm, then a spell a short time later with Mary Eyster and Joe Canale, at least 9 species warbler visited the rock heavy eddy I dug out with pickaxe and shovel a year ago in the Ambergill Creek. Among those bathing eye-level warbler species: NASHVILLE, NORTHERN PARULA, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, YELLOW, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and  BLUE-WINGED (observed by Joe Canale)  .And furthermore, stunning appearances of male BALTIMORE ORIOLE, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK along with a constantly water dipping WARBLING VIREO  from its Gray Dogwood shrub perch and a wary female SCARLET TANAGER added some appreciation of the scene.

Meanwhile, as I waited for Mary, a true delight inside the Ravine. In a big oak above the creek, across from the Pine, a warbler flurry in the canopy. Great quality birds such a CAPE MAY WARBLER, TENNESSEE, BLUE-WINGED with NORTHERN PARULA  looked down on eye level CHESTNUT-SIDED AND WORM -EATING WARBLERS. It was hot in there for a late afternoon chilly spot with 14 species warblers in less an hour.

In other reports, rarities continue to bless the park. HOODED WARBLER was heard and seen in the West Island region, the bird spotted by Rob Bate and heard again by Larry. I found a eye level YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, along Center Drive, opposite the green large dumpsters. And more post afternoon magic, in the evening , a text from Adam Welz that he found the very cooperative a still present PROTHONOTARY WARBLER under the Terrace Bridge, a frequent and reliable locale for this rare species for most of the two weeks Prospect birders been seeing this bird.
