Black Vulture Records for Prospect

Kingsboider note: Sunday's Black Vulture sighting (D.Gochfeld)was the 7th record for Prospect Park for this highly rare species here. In 2009 , there were three separate flyover sightings : 5/7, 4/25,4/23

before that: 4/13/08,9/15/01, 5/22/1938 ( and 5/23/1938).

There has been a trend of Black Vultures in recent years in NYC, more common observations along the high ridge ground regions of NYC ( but unusual for terminal moraine Brooklyn and Queens where there is lack of updrafts producing ridges) . I read a report that there was a recent breeding record in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island. So...keep looking up !

Note on the feeders:

New fence replaced the old deformed fence in front of the feeders, which was breached by photographers last Sunday. I prefer no one go beyond the new fence ; if you see someone inside the fence, let them know they are not allowed there... at the disservice of birders who want to enjoy birds undisturbed. (wished the squirrrels would listen too ;)> ) Thanks
