For a typically peak day for Prospect Park, a subpar birding day.In what continues to be a puzzling spring migration season here , finding birds and numbers becomes a struggle. Birders have to work hard and patiently to get good glances ; and when eared birders locate constant singing, the early leaf out of trees ( my goodness, the pollen was just terrible today!) makes seeing difficult. ( for your info, I havent seen a Yellow Warbler yet ! :(> ...tsk,tsk)
Today's birding hilight (if thinking "new" FOS) was likely BAY-BREASTED WARBLER (J.Zinn + BBC m.obs), located to the right of the Quaker Cemetery entrance during the Thursday Brooklyn Bird Club Walk. Shortly after , the Bay-Breasted male was found again under excellent ( given our luck with leaves) viewing in a cherry just above the bridle trail just off the Center Drive near the cemetery fence east corner. Other reports of BLACKBURNIAN & MAGNOLIA Warbler along Quaker Cemetery southwest fence ( P.Cook) qualifies the cemetery region as one of the better bird spots today. Also WORM-EATING WARBLER reported at Ambergill Creek (R.Jett), increasing song of the Blackpoll Warbler ( many heard , unseen) and Yellow Warbler , Nashville, and Northern Parula fulfilled the warbler "mini"parade of May 6th.
On the non warbler side, EASTERN WOOD PEWEE species was backed by a couple of vireo species, Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks, Scarlet Tanagers, Great Crested Flycatcher, Wood Duck, Green Heron ; Swainson's and Wood Thrushes makes it a worthwhile day despite low numbers with the warblers.
Tomorrow is another day, hopefully a bigger parade passing through. I'll throw some horseshoes around....
