May 8th Birdathon results (no lists yet till I rest up),Prospect special sighting

It's been a LONG , LONG day. Arriving into Prospect with my team at Bartel Pritchard park entrance at 6 am, I did not get back home till after 11 pm ! A 17 hour marathon of 14 hours birding , ending with 3 hours counting the birds and enjoying spirits with two other teams at Mary's place. What we had to contend with all day was morning rain, followed by high winds out in the open marshes of Jamaica Bay Refuge, buffeted sometimes by 40 plus mile winds..but all for a GOOD CAUSE in monetary support of the "Friends of Jamaica Bay Refuge" . It was also worth it , all of us enjoying the beauty of birds and the joys of migration. It only happens twice a year ....

In the end, my team ( Peter, Mary,Tom, Sandy, & Keir) recorded 114 species ( 78 in Prospect Park), Eddies team ( with Donna, Bob , and Andrew) recorded 88 species, Paul's members walk recorded 75.

The OVERALL BIRDATHON TOTAL by ALL 3 BBC TEAMS was 128 species

With the crazy weather combo of sporadic rain downpours and high winds stunting passerine flight, all these numbers were very good under trying conditions.

I will publicize the lists and top sightings later when I process them into ebirds database and an "E" checklist, hopefully tonight.

If you were intending to donate based on any of the numbers above, please contact me at prosbird@aol.com

From Janet Zinn , May 9th sighting

We had an unusual group of 11 (!!) Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (at least six males) with FIVE indigo buntings (4 m/1 f) inside the Quaker cemetary. All together pecking through some woodchips that were spread on the driveway of the cemetary. Cool to see all together on the ground.
