May 9th: Windy Prospect yet the birds are coming through

Hilights today under early morning cold ,windy conditions that stalls migration and minimize bird activity is salvaged by the presence of good Swallows, namely CLIFF and Bank with other quality birds supporting those sightings. The appearance of CLIFF SWALLOW (J.Ascher,Chaoyan) is a good one for Prospect, seen on the Lake along with 4 BANK and the usual swallow species. Afternoon birding (per Keir) after much wind have abated was productive ;good numbers of Scarlet Tanagers and Rose -breasted Grosbeak are reported most of the day :see the previous posting regarding these two species. Also, CAPE MAY WARBLER ,Blue-winged Warbler & Yellow-throated Vireo reported at the Nethermead (3 arches) Bridge (J.Canale) ;Worm-eating warbler, Orchard Oriole in afternoon showings. A later report of Gray-cheeked Thrush plus 2 Hooded Warblers (R.Jett) the previous day. Birdathon teams list reports will be posted tomorrow via another link. Today is a day of rest for me...

From John Ascher:
note: with Chaoyan

At 11AM today (Sun) and again at 5PM Chaoyan and I
saw a lot of swallows on the lake including Cliff (1), Bank
(multiple), Tree (1), and numerous Barn (about 20).

In our two trips across the park we saw at least 10 Scarlet
Tanagers, and heard or saw many Northern Parula and
Blackpoll Warblers (at least 10 each).

Here are additional species for the 5/9 Prospect list:

Canada Goose
Ruddy Duck - 1 male (vs. pair yesterday)
DC Cormorant - 2
Downy Woodpecker
Bank Swallow - perhaps 4 on Lake
Cliff Swallow - 1 Lake
Tree Swallow - 1 Lake
Black-capped Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
Wood Thrush
Black-throated Green Warbler - 3
Brown-headed Cowbird

From Keir Randall:

Despite the cold and wind, surprisingly birdy this pm, especially the woodchip path from GAP
to the Rose Garden (close to Flatbush Ave), the Vale and Nethermead Arches area - many singing warblers, orioles and vireos, very low down.

from Rob Jett May 8th observations:
also observer Heydi Lopes

There were 2 Hooded Warblers in the park; a male by Rick's Place and a female across the road from the Quaker Cemetery. .... I spotted the 2nd hoodie flying across the path near the bottom of the stairs. Also, we had a Gray-cheeked Thrush on the bridle path behind the Music Pagoda. We played both BITH (Bicknell's) and GCTH (just in case), but it only reacted to the GCTH.... In all, we totaled 19 species of warbler in Prospect.
