4/24 Prospect Rarities....Prothonotary Warb, YTWA,uncommon Northern Harrier

This posting sent to Ebirds Listserve:

This morning en route to work at my Wollman Rink office, I stopped by Duck Island 7:00 am to count the Black-crowned Night herons. Then I saw a Yellow Warbler , took a quick look and started walking, keeping my head looking in the island direction. Then I saw it , a bright yellow bird flying from the Island's northeast corner, thru the trees until it landed mid story. I took special notice from that distance ( at least 75 feet away) .It was a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER.

After some quick text messages, some more birders came, two-Rob Bate and Ed Crowne-- also saw the southern warbler, and the bird settled in at the back side or south side of the island ( the channel) , among snags near the phragmite eastern end.Rob Bate had his scope and we both saw the bird well, at one point, a foot above some sun-basking Red Slider turtles. Soon a number of more birders reported the Prothonotary still present at that location up to eleven am Duck Island is near the rink, at the southeast corner of Prospect Lake. There is a rustic shelter where the view was best to the left of it.

Also reported was the YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, reported by Keir Randall, seen above the Well house, but working its way up slope on Lookout Hill's southern slope, towards Butterfly Meadow. It was not relocated. At least we know its still here. So, for me, my persistent habit of counting the night herons on Duck Island hit pay dirt. Good birding,
