May 9th Birdathon Appeal

Dear readers and birders:

I thought I take this opportunity to advertise to you about the upcoming International Bird Migratory Day on May 9th. AS you all know, this is an event that raises monies for conservation causes, to protect our bird species and the habitats they live in , pass thru , or winter.

The Brooklyn Bird Club has in the past 6 years put together a team for various causes; some causes we have supported were "Save The Cerulean Warbler", "The Boreal Bird Initiative " and last year's Calverton Grassland or Environmental Park at Calverton to stave off intended development of the Grumman Airport for grassland bird species in which we raised $3800.00.

This year, we will be doing something very special. In commemoration of the Brooklyn Bird Club's 100th year this June 5th, we will be supporting the Prospect Park Alliance to restore bird habitat at a site in northern Prospect Park, the first and headquarters home of the Club. The objective is to raise monies for buying plants from pledges raised on May 9th based on the # bird species seen by the club's team or ( more teams) of birds seen within the Brooklyn borough. All monies will be steered towards plants bought by the Natural Resources Department of which i am employed and will be supervising the project. Brooklyn Bird Club members and donors will be the main volunteers planting those plants in the fall, dates to be determined . ( keep tuned to the calendar on http://www.brooklynbirdclub.org/ )

I am hoping ,despite in this not so good economy, you will be able to contribute a donation to support the Brooklyn Bird Club birdathon team. You can contact me at Prosbird@aol.com if you are interested in pledging or asking for more information. I will be keeping you apprised of the latest developments in the coming days. See field trips on the Brooklyn Bird club website for more info on the event. If you are interested by the way in forming your own team, please let me know and I 'll see if other folks like to join up for fun, whether you are a skilled birder, intermediate or a beginner.

The Birdathon is only 4 weeks away! I hope you would be helping create a new birding rich habitat site in Prospect Park.

Good birding
