Prospect March 2nd Great Egret returns and spring knocks early....(we hope!)

GREAT EGRET at Lake west shore..spring ?

Prospect Park saw its season's first GREAT EGRET at the west shore of Prospect Lake. This represents the earliest Great Egret on record for the park eclipsing the March 10th, 2004 sighting. Talk about an " early bird special".

On the lake also of note were 5 HOODED MERGANSERS and the drake WOOD DUCK, the latter at Three Sisters Islands with 3 of the Hooded Mergs, while 2 other Mergs were seen gliding on the now mostly open lake by ice islands and larger mass in the western section.

At the feeders, a COMMON GRACKLE kept at bay multiple Red-winged Blackbirds, commandeering the middle feeder.

Along the West shore Lake, at the phramite patches, SWAMP SPARROW .
