Prospect March 24th

Chilly day ( well cold more like it), and that's typical weather for a drake BUFFLEHEAD, seen this afternoon on the lake very near the West Island shelter. It glided along the west shore.Farther out nearer the Peninsula side, a PIED-BILLED GREBE mingling near RUDDY DUCKS and the usual complement of NORTHERN SHOVELERS

But off water , until three "jumped in" the lake , 4 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were on the 3 Sister Islands perched by the strait. On the other end of that same island, also 4 counted were BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, present as well yesterday for an overnighter. So, Quartets abound.

Center Drive seems like the best action today, one AMERICAN TREE SPARROW with busy AMERICAN ROBINS scrounging through the snow covered ground. [ Rob Bate reports a very good influx of Robins throughout. See his report]. I ran into Mary E who mentioned a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET near the 3 Arches.

Yesterday, with my fingers crossed, I saw 2 drake WOOD DUCKS courting a hen on the Upper Pool by the back shore. ( Psst, Hey fellas, there's a nest box on the island ready for her)
