May 8th Prospect; Summer song, warbler orchestra

Its still Summer in these parts, particularly in Prospect  , and especially in the Vale Cashmere shining thru as the hot spot this spring. For the second day, SUMMER TANAGER was reported, another individual, seen in a large Tulip tree in the Vale , with ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS. This follows the original bird from yesterdays SUMMER TANAGER  seen I presumed in the Boulder Bridge area. HOODED WARBLER also seen in the Vale, at the main entrance to it from Nellie's Lawn, where Rafael spotted it in the BBC Centennial Garden, before it took off east ward. Later it was reported in the north Midwood, perhaps the same individual (TStephenson).

Hooded Warbler was among 19 species warblers today , as cited by Tom Stephenson with CAPE MAY and WILSONs topping the list and increased numbers of BLACKPOLL. So, even with stiff winds, warblers are putting in their best appearance.

Results of the BBC Tuesday Walk:

Good walk today with 7 of us in total seeing 55 species of birds, (56 really but I didn't see the Prairre Warbler.)

We got the previously reported Summer Tanager and a second one as well in the Vale of Cashmere.  They were in a large Tulip Tree with several Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and several Baltimore Orioles.  It was busy in spots, very good on Lookout Hill's west slope.

From Tom Stephenson:

Hi Peter,

I was asked by Jeff Nulle from Linnaean Society to take David Wingate into the park today. He's giving a lecture tonight at the museum on his discovery and preservation of the Bermuda Petrel.

Anyway, Prospect Park yielded up some good birds. We had 19 species of warblers including Wilson's, at least 2 Cape May, Canada, Prairie, Hooded (heard by the lower midwood about an hour before Rafael had one in the BBC Garden, maybe the same bird), lots of Blackpolls now in, Summer Tanager, Indigo Bunting (at least 2), and other stuff. Hopefully some will remain for Thursday's walk.

Best regards,
Tom

From Simon Bronstein:

Hi, Peter,

Yesterday, after you drove away to
Maryland Monument site, we continued our
birding on Lookout Hill - but no warblers there
(we saw only one Kingbird on Butterfly Field).
Then we walked down the hill toward Quaker
Cemetery and then along the fence and horse
trail. Approximately 500 feet to the east from QC
entrance we hit the “magic”spot.Looking over the
fence to the QC, here were few old fallen trees and
few young trees.
There (same spot – we did not even move) we saw
(in addition to a few Robins and a few Cat Birds):
6 Yellow Ramp Warblers (at least),
1 Downy,
1 Hermit Thrush,
1 Parula,
1 Hooded Warbler,
1 Tanager,
1 small warbler with round yellow head (very intense yellow) – looks
similar to hermit warbler, but probably it is someone else,
1 small warbler with yellow head and half of the back - do not know who it is.

Wish you were there – there is a police box # 6819 close to this spot
on the Center Drive.
