On a day that starts with rare GIANT SWALLOWTAIL --found by Steve Nanz in the Midwood --kicked off the day's quality birding day. Kathy later reported the butterfly as having its lower wings or tail pretty chewed up, so maybe the poor thing was being chased around as a tasty snack by birds... 4 reports today highlights BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO in a cooperative manner ( 15 secs viewing) at Ctr Dr and again at Butterfly Meadow, WORM-EATING WARBLER ( Keir at Ricks Pl) and BLUE GROSBEAK in Butterfly Meadow as the top gem for the day. 7 species warblers it looks like from the reports.

From Dennis Hreshowsik:
peter,
here is list for today. highlights included ovenbird and nowa near rose garden, redstart in midwood and several b&w warb. while on butterfly meadow bobbi spotted a larger bird among the goldfinches in the central brush. i looked and my nocs were filled with orange wing bars, female blue grosbeak! later on horse trail along central drive i saw bird fly across the path who's silhouette made my cuckoo neuron fire. found the bird perched in the canopy and was treated to a good look at black billed cuckoo! we ran into emily and kathy earlier in the day who told us they think they observed a black billed cuckoo on butterfly meadow but bird was back lit and they could not be certain. perhaps this was their bird. nice to be back on dry land after a long stretch of shore birding.
see you in the field,

From Kathy Toomey:
Hi Peter,
Emily and I also saw the Giant Swallowtail butterfly in the Midwood by
Rick's Place, at about 12 o'clock. It was a little chewed up,
missing one of its tails.
We also saw the Black-billed Cuckoo close to Butterfly Meadow off the
trail that leads down to the Maryland Monument.

From Adam Welz:
Hi Peter
Had a morning in the Park, much of it birding with Jean Altomare. Was
around the Lullwater, Lookout, Peninsula. Saw a flight of warblers
moving down the Peninsula, but too far to ID any, alas.
Had a few warbs, a 90% certain Least Flycatcher on Lookout (looks a
little too distant for me to be comfortable calling it definite), two
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher on Lookout, a funny-looking first-year
Blue-winged Warb (almost no wingbars), a few frustratingly bad looks
at unidentified small passerines on Lookout, a very young White-Eyed
Vireo on Breeze Hill (interesting plumage), very few waterbirds on the
Lake.
Cheers!
