It begins anew..with best wishes for the New Year, I hope the good birds find you throughout 2010. Furthermore, good health and prosperity be yours as well.
The Brooklyn Bird Club begins her second century, after a fantastic centennial 2009 full of good cheer, celebration and great people partaking in her 100th year. I like to thank all on behalf of the Brooklyn Bird Club ranking members for making her historic birthday a truly memorable affair.
Here's a toast to the club's everlasting influence on the birding community , friends, and birders near and far .
Thank you and to you the best of birding in '10 ,
Peter,

From Rafael Campos:
Date: 01 January 2010
Site: Prospect Park, Brooklyn, Kings Co.; NY
Observer: Rafael Campos R.
As I do every year since I moved to Park Slope, the first day of every year, I walk to PP for my first birding walk. I left the house around 8:15 and returned around 11:30. Most of the park was covered by snow+ice. The bird activity was almost zero, except for those who were feeding at the feeders in Breezy Hill, and the large numbers of gulls standing in the frozen surface of the lake.
While I was walking by the Boat House, a flock of Mourning Doves took off, and out of nowhere, a Cooper's Hawk tried, in vain, to catch its breakfast.
Last bird, thanks to Mary Eyster, was a Rusty Blackbird, seen near the Nethermead Arches. Also in same area, 1 Fox Sparrow & 1 female Eastern Towhee.
Here is the list for the first day of the year 2010:
Canada Goose
Mute Swan
American Black Duck (2, Lake)

Kingsboider note: Assuming the objective is 200 species for Prospect every year, today's total species was 40 or 20% of the year's 200 bird objective total. Birders today got 1/5 of the bird species needed.Of course, it takes awhile and luck....;)> .We'll know by next week what 2009 yielded.Good birding.
