Hilights today are ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, late Common Nighthawk; Lincoln & White-crowned Sparrows among the sparrow variety.
Up on Breeze Hill where its barely birded, several dirt mounds with weeds growing out of them may not look pretty but provides excellent cover , especially for fall migrants such as sparrows. But despite the mounds holding a hoard of Song Sparrows, one ORANGE -CROWNED WARBLER stole the show; In the mound at the east end of the meadow, between a round lamppost and the large green trash container, the rare warbler worked its way thru the weeds. It stayed out for quite abit of time. Unfortunately I forgot my cell phone that I use to post to twitter and my blog. Blame my forgetfulness on a groggy Saturday morning after an all day trip to Jones Beach the previous day.
Nearby , towards the Boathouse, two WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS hugged the fence line on the slope above the Boathouse; one was a nice looking adult.
Sparrows were good in several locations, not alot of numbers but variety was noted. A LINCOLN SPARROW skulked at the "Sparrowbowl", the vale between the Tennis and Picnic Mansions. It stayed near the right corner .In the ball fields fence enclosure, Savannah in lesser numbers hung out with Palm Warblers.
But the best surprise of the day, as I talked to Deborah Jaffe and David Drake, birders I know in Prospect , occurred when Deborah spotted a late species above us near the Three Arches Bridge, a COMMON NIGHTHAWK! Now that bird must be going on a lonely flight to find the rest of his pals..
