November 18th and 19th reports Prospect + CAGO band info

Pine Siskins continue their welcomed presence in Prospect. On the ramp from the Propsite to the lower yard at the 9th street garage , 11 Pine Siskins on the ground fed upon sweetgum seeds raining down upon them. It may be hard to see those from outside the high chain link fence but patience may be rewarded as those birds move around. Other sparrows are mixed in there. But Pine Siskins are seen well at the Nethermead Arches bridge, on the north side in the Sweetgums there with an observed uptick of American Goldfinches as well.

Monk Parakeets came back to visit and the usual winter species one would expect  such as Brown Creeper.

Meanwhile, all these birds got to worry about this Merlin hanging out in the park..It must be loving it here. ( of course, plenty of avian dishes to choose from)

Also a note from Adam on a banded CAGO.

Hi Peter

On the way home today I stopped by the lake and saw a banded Canada Goose feeding on the shore.

I was able to read its band number via my binoculars and submitted an online report to the Bird Banding Lab who immediately sent me back the following info:

INFORMATION FROM OUR FILES:

Band Number: 1028-71792

Where bird was banded: New York

Date banded: 06/17/2008

Species: Canada Goose

Also saw and photographed a weird hybrid Canada/Someothergoose. Prob the same one reported earlier.

Cheers!

Adam
