April 21st Prospect reports inc BBC "Thursdays" walk

At least ten warbler species appeared in this windy day, which affected bird movement later in the morning. The best of the warblers was WORM-EATING, seen in the Upper Pool area, and likely a second one at the west side Lullwater. Near the end of the day, a gorgeous looking male PRAIRIE WARBLER --enhanced by the setting sun--worked along the shore of the Lullwater Cove trail, opposite the Rustic Arbor.

Rusty Blackbird, Great Crested Flycatcher, Baltimore Oriole, Bank Swallow were some new or good quality species seen today.

Despite the usual early morning offerings when birding is best, the afternoon can be good given the right conditions ( like Wind Die down!). Along the Lullwater northwest trail from the Lullwater Bridge, several good species or good activity occurred. TheWHITE-EYED VIREO reported here earlier, was also the scene for BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, and a small mostly warbler flurry in late afternoon: YELLOW-RUMPs in great plumage now, along with PALMS, a PINE , RC KINGLET and a BLUE-HEADED VIREO. Just a little further down the trail, the PRAIRIE put on a show. An hour earlier, a juvenile BALTIMORE ORIOLE inside the Tennis House compound might be the season's park first. Along the way, over the Lily Pool or close by, flyovers BROAD-WINGED HAWK and a hunting Osprey doing several circuits of the Boathouse Pond, but didn't bite into diving..

And last, the Lake is a good place to see again after the ducks have gone. Swallows dominate with TREES and BARNS in decent numbers, and particularly with two or three NORTHERN ROUGH -WINGED but more interesting is the little brown swallow, BANK SWALLOW, seen flying mostly between the electric boat anchored at Three Sisters islands and the Peninsula. A little guy that can't be missed....

Results of Thursday Brooklyn Bird Club walk:

Leader: Tom Stephenson

Hi Peter,

Had a great group this AM with about 30 people. Great weather, good birds, very good birders...

All in all still early, but we had a few highlights including 2 different Rusty Blackbirds...that makes 3 in the park as neither of the two today were the fully black plumage of one I had a week ago or so.

Other highlights include Sharp-shinned Hawk (I believe 2 different birds), Worm-eating Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Chimney Swift, House Wren, Ovenbird and Field Sparrow. Also I heard a Great Crested Flycatcher call and almost walked by as I thought it was too early and I must have been hallucinating..(it happens...) but someone spotted it...

Best regards,

Tom

From Larry:

Hi Peter,

Felt like the wind blew a lot of birds away. Certainly the
highlight was the Blue-winged Warbler I saw in a tree
near @ the Boathouse[Lullwater] Bridge. Got a good
look at it for a couple of minutes

.. then poof--it disappeared.

Hi Peter,

After I left Tom's BBC group, I saw another Worm-Eating Warbler,

in the Lullwater (on the Neathermeade side). I think it must be

hanging out there. It was in the same general area where I saw it a

few days ago - just past the pine trees that are close to Terrace

Bridge. It was down by the water, then flew across the path to the

side that rises up toward Wellhouse Drive.
